Alice Sankey (daughter of Arthur Vernon Sankey)

Alice Sankey, death notice, Published in Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 21, 2011; http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/vancouversun/obituary.aspx?n=alice-bluck-sankey&pid=151175200: “Bluck, Alice (nee Sankey) January 3, 1922 – May 5, 2011 With love and sadness we honour the life and passing of our dear mother. Alice was ever-welcoming, kind, witty and a staunch friend. She was steadfast, open-minded, open-handed, dependable, wise and strong. She spoke through her actions and encouraged everyone she met. Alice was born in Vancouver and loved it her whole life long. As a young woman she taught in a one-room schoolhouse in the Cariboo and later worked for the Bank of Montreal where she met Marsh. They were married over 59 years and raised three daughters in Kitsilano with magical summers at “the Lookout” on Galiano. Alice gave freely to others through the Kinettes, Save The Children, and other charities. She had a lifelong involvement with Girl Guides Canada as a leader, running camps at ‘Olave’, as a District and then Divisional Commissioner, and as a Trefoil Guild Member. Alice lived the guide motto, ‘Be Prepared.’ At 65, she re-entered the workforce to co-run the Vancouver Guide office. Her later years were spent caring for Marsh (died 2006). Alice leaves us with lovely memories: Sunday Yorkshire pudding and apple pie, off to the Chinatown lion dances, wandering walks to delight in the first snowdrop, tending the big fire, and good cups of tea. We marvel daily at our extreme good fortune in having been born into her loving arms. We’ll keep on loving and singing and watching the parade without you mom, but it won’t be the same. Alice is survived by daughters Thea Stavroff (Michael McGuire), Cathie (Gabe Somfay), and Susan (Mike Sites) Bluck, granddaughters Layla, Belle, Ezmy and Jennah, sister-in-law Betty, nieces Barbara and Debbie, and nephews Doug, Mike and Neville Sankey. Condolences to the family at: 2600 Grafton Ave, Qualicum Beach, BC, V9K 1Y1.”

Marshall Warwick Bluck (husband of Alice Sankey)

Marshall Warwick Bluck, death notice, published in Vancouver Sun on June 9, 2006; http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/vancouversun/obituary.aspx?n=marshall-warwick-bluck&pid=18037756: “Bluck, Marshall Warwick, F.C.B.A. died May 19th, 2006 in his 90th year. We will miss his open heart, spirit of adventure, and love of ideas. In WWII he served as an RCAF Flying Officer in Egypt, Libya, Malta, Sicily and Italy receiving honours including the Africa, Italy, and Malta Stars, and remained active for many years in the RCAF Reserve as Public Relations Officer. He worked in the Bank of Montreal and was President of the Bank Employees Association before starting his own innovative business, the Vancouver Whisky Exchange. His concern for others and for his community found expression in his public relations activities for the Kinsmen Club, Red Cross, Community Chest, and YMCA, and in founding of the Brock House Croquet Club. A great love of music and wonderful dancing ability inspired him to found the Senior’s Tea Dance at Aberthau. His curiosity, open-mindedness, love of life, creativity, and insight will live on in his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Alice, and his sister, Betty, as well as his daughters, granddaughters, nieces, nephews, and Binky. His cremated remains will be laid to rest at the place he best loved to work and play, Galiano Island. At his request, donations can be made to the South Galiano Fire Department, (M.W. Bluck Memorial), 261 Georgeson Bay Rd., Galiano Island, BC, V0N 1P0. Sympathy to the family at: 415 Pioneer Crescent, Parksville, BC, V9K 1V3. Cheers!”
