Cornish, Reginald Percy (1872-1957)

Reginald Percy Cornish was an accountant. He lived at 1856 Barclay Street in 1904.

Rginald Percy Cornish was born in Narberth, Pembrokeshire, South Wales, on November 19, 1872. His father was Rev. Charles Cornish (1827-1907). His mother was Francis Sarah Tucker (1831-1926).

Reginald appears to have arrived in Canada about 1885.

“Percy Cornish” first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1898. He was boarding with Harland Harwick at 706 Granville Street.

Henderson’s BC Gazetteer and Directory, 1898, page 539

Henderson’s BC Gazetteer and Directory, 1898, page 539

He was at the following addresses in Vancouver:

1898 706 Granville Street
1901 1129 Georgia Street
1904 1748 Barclay Street (names); 1856 Barclay Street (street listing)
1906 to 1908 North Vancouver

On April 23, 1899, in Vancouver, Reginald married Alice Francis Georgina Bucke. She was born on September 4, 1870, in Ottawa, Ontario. Her father was Phillip Eustace Bucke (1831-1918). Her mother was Sidney Sarah Rothwell (or Wade) (1841-1920).

In 1901, Reginald was in a firm of advertising writers and agents with Benjamin Franklin Dickens (1860-1952). Mr. Dickens was a promoter of Indian River Park and the Wigwam Inn, which are on Indian Arm on the north shore of Burrard Inlet. Mr. Dickens later worked in the advertising department of the Vancouver Province newspaper.

Henderson’s BC Gazetteer and Directory, 1901, page 665

Henderson’s BC Gazetteer and Directory, 1901, page 665

In 1906, Alice visited with friends in eastern Canada. She returned to Vancouver in March 1906.

Also in 1906, Reginald appeared in the 1906 Canada Census, among a series of residents of Coleman, Alberta. However, he gave his post office address as “Vancouver.”

It appears that Reginald and Alice were divorced sometime before 1913. Alice continued to live much of the time in Vancouver. She died in Vancouver on January 29, 1940.

On May 20, 1913, in Los Angeles, California, Reginald married Lois Abigail (“Gail”) Foster. She was born in Colorado on May 8, 1886. Her father was Clarence D. Foster. Her mother was Olive Ross.

Reginald and Gail lived in Los Angeles throughout the mid-1920s. In 1925, both Reginald and Gail applied to become naturalized United States citizens. (Even though Gail was born in Colorado, it appears that her marriage to Reginald in 1913 meant that she had the same nationality as Reginald. As a result, she lost her United States citizenship, which she regained through the naturalization process.)

From the 1930s until the 1940s, Reginald and Gail lived in Oceanside, north of San Diego, California. Reginald and Gail did not have any children.

Reginald died in San Francisco, California, on June 22, 1957. He was buried in Colma, San Mateo, California.

Gail died on March 11, 1961, in San Francisco. She was buried in Colma, San Mateo, California.

Reginald and Alice had the following children.

Gordon Leonard Cale Cornish

Gordon Leonard Cale Cornish was born in London, Ontario, on August 15, 1901.

In 1921, he was living in Vancouver with his mother.

He later worked as an electrical engineer.

On November 4, 1927, in Toronto, Ontario, he married Marion Euphemia Rayner, who was a stenographer. She was born in Ontario about 1906. Her parents were William Henry and Mary Rayner.

Gordon was living in Toronto in 1940.

Willa Frances Cornish

Willa Frances Cornish was born in London, Ontario, on May 10, 1903.

In 1921, she was living with her mother in Vancouver.

She worked as a school teacher. It appears that she never married.

Willa died North Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 29, 1983.

“Any woman who is now or may hereafter be married . . .”: Women and Naturalization, ca. 1802-1940;, by By Marian L. Smith, Prologue Magazine, Summer 1998, Vol. 30, No. 2; http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1998/summer/women-and-naturalization-1.html: “Just as alien women gained U.S. citizenship by marriage, U.S.-born women often gained foreign nationality (and thereby lost their U.S. citizenship) by marriage to a foreigner. As the law increasingly linked women’s citizenship to that of their husbands, the courts frequently found that U.S. citizen women expatriated themselves by marriage to an alien.”

Cable Act, Wikipedia article; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_Act: “The Cable Act of 1922 (ch. 411, 42 Stat. 1021, “Married Women’s Independent Nationality Act”) was a United States federal law that reversed former immigration laws regarding marriage.(It is also known as the Married Women’s Citizenship Act or the Women’s Citizenship Act). Previously, a woman lost her US citizenship if she married a foreign man, since she assumed the citizenship of her husband, a law that did not apply to US citizen men who married foreign women.”

Dickens, 3582 West 14th Avenue, who very kindly called at the City Archives for a chat, 24 June 1937. Indian River Park. Wigwam Inn. Mr. Dickens said: “I was the original owner and promoter of Indian River Park and Wigwam Inn. We had four properties up there at Indian River, at first D.L. 819 and 820; afterwards we acquired two more district lots, I think D.L. 1461 and 1436; D.L. 819 and 820 were the original ones. A registered townsite plan deposited with the Land Registry, but the plan was afterwards cancelled by the present owner, Edward J. Young, No. 1 Main Street, Madison, Wisconsin, a millionaire lumberman who has interests from here to Alaska. The property now extends from about Croker Island to a quarter of a mile up the Indian River.”
