Father and Mother

Thomas’s father was Thomas Joseph Chambers (1849–1898). He was a printer and a theatrical designer, who was sometimes called “Tom Chambers,” “Joseph Chambers” or “Joseph Thomas Chambers.”

Thomas Joseph Chambers’s mother was Annie Florence Lauder (or Lawder) (1858–1896), who was a daughter of Edward Lawder. According to one source, Joseph Chambers married Annie Florence Lauder in 1870. Other sources say that their marriage was not until 1880.

The Chambers family lived in Grafton Street in Manchester.

By the mid-1890s, the marriage had broken down. In 1896, Mrs. Chambers and several of the children were living at 12 Greenside Road, Shepherd’s Bush, in London. (Joseph Chambers was also living in London, but he was not in the same house as the rest of the family.)

The son of a tenant in the Greenside Road house killed Mrs. Chambers by attacking her with a hammer and a knife. The verdict was that the attacker was guilty of the act and that he was insane at the time.
