Robert McLeod Shaw was a physician who lived at 1825 Robson Street from 1913 to 1915.

 

Family Background

Robert McLeod Shaw was born on November 2, 1881, in Victoria Corner, Carleton County, New Brunswick. His parents were Elijah Miles Shaw (1837-1909) and Mary (“Polly”) McLeod (1841-1887).

Elijah Shaw was a farmer who lived many years in New Brunswick before moving to Victoria, British Columbia, in 1908, He died in Victoria on March 11, 1909.

Robert’s mother, Mary, was the second of Elijah Shaw’s three wives. She died in Victoria Corner, New Brunswick in 1887.

 

Early Years

Robert studied at Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree.

In 1904 he became a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa fraternity.

He later studied medicine at McGill University in Montreal.

Life in British Columbia

At the time of the 1911 Canada census, Robert was a medical doctor at the hospital in Michel, British Columbia.

He arrived in Vancouver about 1913. He lived at 1825 Robson Street; his medical office was in number 6 of the Templeton Block, at 9 East Hastings Street.

In April 1915, in Victoria, British Columbia, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War. He was wounded while he was in France.

While he was in Europe, it appears that he married Eleanor Mary Dobson, a nurse who was born in Enderby, Leicestershire. The marriage was in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, in 1917.

In the 1921 Canada census, Robert was a doctor, living in Montreal, Quebec. He was married to Mary, who was born in England, and who had arrived in Canada in 1919.

By the fall of 1921, Robert was in Edmonton, Alberta. He was working in the provincial laboratory in the Medical Building at the University of Alberta. He was also an assistant professor of bacteriology at the university.

He became a full professor in 1930.

In 1939 he became the acting head of the Department of Bacteriology.

From 1942 to 1950 he was the head of the department. He was also the director of the provincial health laboratory. He retired in 1950.

Eleanor died in 1973. She was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Edmonton.

Robert died in Edmonton on May 19, 1974. He was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Edmonton.

Anne Eleanor Shaw was born in Edmonton on February 11, 1928.

In 1954, she married William Einar Sigurdson, who became a psychiatrist. He was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, on July 15, 1927. His parents were Christian Sigurdson and Hazel P. Hamilton.

Anne and William moved to the United States, where Anne worked as a laboratory technician, and William spent several years as a physician with the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas.

In 1966 Anne and William became naturalized United States citizens.

William died on April 15, 2001, and he was buried in Sun City West, Maricopa County, Arizona.

Ruth Shaw married Mr. J. Martin. She was living in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1974.
