Chipman, Robert Somerville (1874-1906)

Robert Somerville Chipman was an accountant who lived at 1155 Denman Street in 1906 and 1907. His widow, Isabel, lived at 1155 Denman Street in 1908.

Robert was born in Lower Horton, Nova Scotia, on March 22, 1874. His father was Henry Chipman (1844-1919), who was a medical doctor in Nova Scotia. Robert’s grandfather was William Henry Chipman (1807-1870), who was a Nova Scotia merchant, farmer, and member of the first group of politicians elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1867.

In the 1881 and 1891 Canada censuses, Robert was living with his father in Lower Horton, Nova Scotia.

By about 1895, he was living in Calgary, Northwest Territories [later Alberta]. He played for the Calgary Fire Brigade hockey team. He also played goal for the Calgary Fire Brigade Association football team.

He was also an active curler in Calgary.

He also participated in Calgary’s theatrical scene.

On August 16, 1898, in Calgary, Robert married Isabel Macdonald Hastie. She was born on April 10, 1872, in Ontario. Her father was James Hastie.

In the 1901 Canada census, Robert and Isabel were living in Calgary.

Robert appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1906 and 1907; he was an accountant and was living at 1155 Denman Street.

He died in Vancouver on June 4, 1906. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Isabel continued to live at 1155 Denman Street until 1908.

By the time of the 1911 Canada census, Isabel and her two children were living in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In 1921, Isabel and her two children were living in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Isabel re-appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1939. She was living at 1847 Pendrell Street, which was the Lindores rooming house, operated by Miss Amy W. Lindsay.

Isabel died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on January 27, 1966. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Robert and Isabel had the following children.

 

Laura Anne Grace Evangeline Chipman

Laura Anne Grace Evangeline Chipman, sometimes called “Anne” or “Evangeline,” was born on January 29, 1900 [some sources say 1899] in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan [other sources say Calgary or Vancouver]. She worked for a time as a bank clerk.

On September 19, 1933, in Vancouver, she married Jack Binns McCallum, who was a bank clerk. He was born in Innisfail, Alberta on July 5, 1905. His father was Artemus Charles Binns McCallum; his mother was Lillie Lena Louis Murray.

Laura died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on August 18, 1987. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Jack died in New Westminster on December 11, 1988. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

 

Roland Everett Chipman

Roland Everett Chipman was born in Vancouver on September 20, 1901 [although his death certificate gives 1900 as his birth year].

In 1911, he was living with Isabel in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In 1921, he was living with Isabel in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He was working as a drug clerk.

By 1925, Roland was living at 11-2570 Spruce Street in Vancouver. He was a druggist with the Pacific Drug Stores. [Albert Ernest Marett (1874-1955) and Albert Scott Reid (1873-1948) were managers of the company. Their earlier business was Marett & Reid, which was at 1216 Denman Street from 1908 to 1911.]

Roland married Margaret Frances Watson. She was born in October 20, 1898, possibly in Vancouver.

Roland died in Vancouver on August 23, 1963. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Margaret died in Vancouver on February 27, 1968. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
