Arthur James Kappele was a lawyer and writer who lived at 1054 Denman Street in 1910 and 1911.

 

Early Life

Arthur James Kappelewas born in Preston, Ontario, on July 25, 1876. His parents were  Stephen S. Kappele (1829-1906) and Christina Elizabeth Dillman (1835-1919). Stephen Kappele was a minister with the Methodist Church.

Arthur went to schools in Cayuga, Ontario and later in Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario.

He also attended Trinity University in Toronto, and then he studied law with his brother’s law firm in Toronto.

He graduated from Osgoode Hall in Toronto. In 1898 he became a member of the Ontario bar (the Law Society of Upper Canada).

To Vancouver

In 1899, Arthur moved to Vancouver. After he became a member of the British Columbia bar in April 1899, he established a general law practice in Vancouver. He became a member of the Vancouver Legal Baseball Team.

He was one of the authors of Bicknell and Kappele’s Practical Statutes of Ontario (1900).

Marriage to Mabel Haynes

On December 10, 1908, in Victoria, British Columbia, Arthur married Mabel Wealthy Haynes. She was born on May 24, 1872 in Moodyville, British Columbia. Her parents were George Washington Haynes (1833-1897) and Sarah Adelaide Hart (1837-1919).

Arthur also wrote non-legal articles and books, including Utopian Snapshots in 1909.

He belonged to the Cascade Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and the Independent Order of Foresters. He was a member of the Terminal City Club, the Press Club, and the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.

In 1921, he was living at 486 West 18th Avenue in Vancouver.

By 1931, he had moved to 367 West 18th Avenue.

He practiced law in British Columbia for over forty years. He died in Vancouver on June 9, 1944.

Mabel died in Okanagan Centre, British Columbia. She was buried in Forest Lawn Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Arthur and Mabel had one daughter.

 

Adelaide Patricia Kappele

Adelaide Patricia Kappele was born in Vancouver on July 12, 1912.

On January 31, 1934, in Vancouver, she married Ian Munro Grant. He was born in Okanagan, British Columbia on December 12, 1909. His parents were John Peter Grant and Alice Munro.

Ian died in Okanagan on June 2, 1965.

Adelaide Patricia Grant died in Okanagan, British Columbia on March 10, 2004.

Saturday Sunset, December 19, 1908, page 3: “A wedding of great interest took place in Victoria on Thursday when Mr. Kappelle [sic] a well known and popular barrister, was married to Miss Haines [sic] of Victoria. Both are well known socially here, Miss Haines having visited our city on many occasions, being the guest of Mrs. W.J. Jafree. The happy pair left on a trip to Eastern Canada.
