Erskine, John (1880-1966)

John Erskine was a bank clerk and real estate broker. He was living at 980 Denman Street in the 1911 Canada census.

He was born on September 22, 1880, in Ashburnham Village, near Peterborough, Ontario. His father was John Erskine (1837-1887), who was a merchant. His mother was Annie McFarlane (about 1840-1917).

John’s father died in Ashburnham in 1887. In 1891, John was living in Ashburnham with his mother.

By 1901, John was living in at 90 Carleton Street, in Toronto, Ontario, along with his aunt, Jessie Scott. John was working as a clerk for the Canadian Bank of Commerce.

John first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. He lived in a series of houses in the West End:

1907 2037 Pendrell Street
1908 1934 Barclay Street
1909 to1911 1890 Georgia Street

From 1910 to 1911, he was a real estate and insurance broker with Hubert Blake McBain (1882-1950), who was also from the Peterborough area in Ontario.

On April 26, 1911, in Vancouver, John married Ada Eleanor Jenkinson. She was born in London, England, on August 28, 1885. Her father was John Jenkinson. Her mother was Lilla Roche.

By 1912, John was an independent financial agent, with his office in the Bank of Ottawa building at 602 West Hastings Street.

In 1913, John and Ada moved to 1768 Barclay Street, where they stayed until 1928. They later lived on the West Side of Vancouver.

In 1916, John worked for the Dominion Trust Company. By 1917, he was back with the Canadian Bank of Commerce, where he stayed until he retired about 1939.

Ada died in Vancouver on January 8, 1957.

John died in Vancouver on February 20, 1966.

John and Ada had the following children.

 

John Francis Erskine

John Francis Erskine was born in Vancouver about 1912. He married Sonja Talbot Wentworth Wood.

In 1970, John was appointed as a commissioner for taking affidavits in British Columbia. He was a trust officer with the Royal Trust Company in Vancouver.

John was living in Sidney, British Columbia in 1985. He died on January 23, 2003.

James Scott Erskine was born in Vancouver on November 26, 1913. He served with the British Airborne Division during the Second World War. He received the Coronation Medal in 1953.

James married Audrey Mary Moon, who was born in Vancouver on March 1, 1920. Her father was Oliver Moon (1884-1955). Her mother was Betsy Angus (1891-1965)

About 1953, James and Audrey moved to Chilliwack, British Columbia. James worked as a technical administrative officer for the Canadian Forces. He was also an active amateur radio operator.

James died in Chilliwack on June 15, 1985.

Audrey died in Chilliwack on November 13, 2004.
