Although it is not certain, W.S. Hugo, the building owner, may have been William Stuart Hugo (about 1868-1946).

In 1901 William S. Hugo was a miner in Dawson, Yukon Territory. He was born in Ireland about 1864, and he arrived in Canada about 1898.

In 1909, William S. Hugo sailed from Liverpool to New York City. He was born in County Clare, Ireland about 1869, and he was going home to Vancouver.

The building consists of two separate two-storey sections, with a one-storey section joining them.

The ground floor is exposed “Calgary red pressed brick.” The upper floor is also brick, but it is covered with metal lath and finished with rough cast cement.
