Margaret Anna (or Anne) Cowin lived at 871 Denman Street in 1913, along with her sister, Charlotte Catherine Cowin.

Margaret was born on the Isle of Man on November 17, 1871. Her father was William Henry Cowin; her mother was Ellen McCombe.

On August 7, 1918, in Victoria, Margaret married Dudley Barnes. He was a rancher, who was born in Birmingham, England, on July 14, 1866. His father was Henry Barnes; his mother was Annie Meredith.

It appears that Dudley arrived in Canada: about 1896. By the time of the 1911 Census, he was a farmer on Lasqueti Island in British Columbia.

In October 1916, Dudley enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. His enlistment documents said that he was born in 1872, but this was not accurate. The original of his attestation form has numbers written above and below his date of birth.

Dudley gave his next of kin as his cousin, Mrs. Lily Weldon, who lived at Sheldon House, Victoria Road, Douglas, Isle of Man. He said that his friend, Margaret Cowin, was the person who should receive communications about him:

Dudley also assigned 15 dollars a month from his pay to Margaret:

Dudley served for over two years with the 143rd Battalion and with the Canadian Railway Troops.

However, he had broken his leg in 1903, and he was often in pain. He walked with a limp, and he was unable to march with the rest of the troops. In March 1918, the standing medical board concluded that he was medically unfit, because of debility and because he was over age for further service.

He was discharged in Victoria, British Columbia, on August 6, 1918.

On August 7, 1918, the day after Dudley’s discharge, he married Margaret in Victoria. After the marriage, it appears that Dudley carried on farming.

By 1936, Dudley had retired from farming; he and Margaret were living at 2604 Palmerston Avenue in West Vancouver.

Dudley died in Vancouver on March 24, 1951. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Margaret died in Vancouver on August 4, 1951. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Dudley and Margaret did not have any children.

Charlotte Catherine Cowin

Margaret’s sister, Charlotte Catherine Cowin, was born on the Isle of Man on January 2, 1885. She married Edward Cannell Daugherty in Vancouver on June 9, 1915. Edward was a draughtsman who was born on the Isle of Man, on November 2, 1884. His parents were William Daugherty and Maria Cannell.

Charlotte died in Vancouver on May 21, 1940.

Edward died in Victoria, British Columbia, on November 18, 1985.

Edward had a daughter, Margaret (“Peggy”) Valentine Daugherty, who was born on February 14, 1916. In 1943, in Toronto, Ontario, she married Harold Nielson Cliff, who was born on November 26, 1913, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Harold later worked as a forester for the British Columbia government.

Margaret died in Victoria, British Columbia, on March 25, 2006.

Harold died in Victoria, British Columbia, on June 27, 2008.
