“Mr. Charles G. Pennock, Director, Made General Manager of Bank of Vancouver; Choice Proves of Merritt Interest; Bright Prophecies are Given out in Regard to His Future Career.

Because he is a director in the Diamond Vale Supply Company, Ltd., the headquarters of which are in Vancouver, Merritt is especially interested in that Mr. Charles G. Pennock, manager of the Vancouver branch of the Bank of Ottawa, has just been appointed general manager of the Bank of Vancouver, in succession to Mr. L. W. Shatford, M. L. A., whose resignation as acting general manager was recently announced. Mr. Pennock will assume his .new duties on March 1 next.

Mr. Charles Graham Pennock was born in 1869 at Ottawa, where his father, the late Philomen P. Pennock, Jr., a barrister, was well known for his culture and ability. He received his education in his home city and commenced his business career as a stenographer in the office of the late Mr. Henry Grist, a patent attorney. Mr. Pennock entered the service of the Bank of Ottawa in July, 1887. His ability attracted the attention of Mr. George Burn, the general manager, and his promotion was rapid. He held successively the position of junior clerk, clerk, teller and later accountant in the Winnipeg branch of that bank. Then he was in turn manager at Parry Sound, Renfrew and Kenora. He was inspector in 1909, when appointed manager of the Vancouver branch established there in October of that year. Since his advent to Vancouver Mr. Pennock has built up a large business for his bank and induced its directors to erect its present home, whose erection he supervised. He has an attractive personality and is recognized as one of the most prominent among the younger financiers in the West.

It is now nearly a year since Mr. Shatford was prevailed upon by his fellow directors to accept the position. He did so at great sacrifice, as devotion to the interests of the bank restricted the time and attention he was able to devote to his own extensive personal business affairs.

In looking about for a strong successor, the choice of the board of directors unanimously fell upon Mr. Pennock, who has had a very successful banking career. After considerable negotion [sic] Mr. Pennock decided to resign from the service of the Bank of Ottawa with which he has been connected since boyhood, and whose welfare he has in various positions done so much to advance and promote.

It is probable that Mr. and Mrs. Pennock will go abroad shortly on a holiday trip. A severe throat trouble has caused his medical adviser to recommend Mr. Pennock to spend several months in a milder climate.

Mr. Pennock, in his new duties, will have ample scope for fulfilling the bright prophecies made respecting his future career. He is a director of Messrs. Mather & Noble, Ltd., financial brokers, the Diamond Vale Supply Co., Ltd., of this city, with a branch in Merritt, and of the Travellers Life Assurance Company of Canada, Montreal, and honorary treasurer of the British Columbia council of the St. John Ambulance Association as well as a member of the Vancouver Clearing House association.

In 1895 he married Miss H. L. Strang, daughter of the late Mr. Robert Strang, Winnipeg.”
