Albert Victor Gardner was born in Belfast, Ireland, on December 3, 1872.

His parents were Richard Gardner and Annie Cairnduff.

Annie was born in Belfast on September 26, 1872. Her parents were George Andrew Smith Vint (1838-1901) and Margaret Vint (1844-1929).

George Vint died in Belfast on June 22, 1901; he was buried in Balmoral Cemetery in Belfast.

Margaret Vint later lived in Canada. She died in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 12, 1929. She was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

In 1902, Albert and Annie travelled to Canada, along with their children.

By 1906 they were living at 618 Furby Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Albert was a clerk in the Canadian Pacific Railway pay department.

Life in Vancouver

Albert first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1909. He was living at 1850 Alberni Street. He was the manager of Nippon Kinyu Sha Limited, a private banking and trust business which had its offices at 270 Powell Street.

The Nippon Kinyu Sha company had been incorporated in British Columbia on December 16, 1907.

Albert continued as the manager of Nippon Kinyu Sha Limited until 1922, when the bank stopped its business and liquidated its assets.

After Nippon Kinyu Sha went out of business, Albert worked with a series of real estate brokers.

Albert died in Vancouver on October 31, 1943. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Annie died in Coquitlam, British Columbia, on January 30, 1952. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Albert and Annie had the following children.

 

Sarah Hay Irene Gardner

Sarah Hay Irene Gardner was born in Belfast, Ireland, on January 11, 1896. (She was often called “Irene.”)

On July 28, 1920, in Vancouver, Irene married Thomas Hoey McGown, who was a clerk. He had served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Thomas was born in Vancouver on December 26, 1894. His parents were James McGown and Jessie Hoey.

In 1930, Irene and Thomas were living in San Francisco, California. Thomas was working as a longshoreman.

By 1941, they were back in Canada. Thomas was a timekeeper with B.C. Marine Engineers and Shipbuilders Ltd.

Sometime before 1942, Thomas and Irene were no longer living together.

Thomas died in Vancouver on February 19, 1942. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Irene died in Essondale, British Columbia, on December 24, 1961. She was buried in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

Thomas and Irene had the following children: Albert (“Bert”) James McGown (1921-1995) and Margaret McGown.

 

George Norman Gardner

George Norman Gardner was born in Belfast, Ireland, on April 8, 1897.

He travelled to Canada with his parents in 1902.

He worked as a bookkeeper.

In 1918, he was drafted to serve in the Canadian Expeditionary Force

In 1921, he became an associate member of the Illuminating Engineering Society.

On June 28, 1922, in Vancouver, he married Alzina Irene Duke. She was born on December 29, 1898, in Ottawa, Ontario. Her parents were Robert Henry Duke (1871-1911) and Barbara Elzina Snell (1872-1954).

George died in Vancouver on December 24, 1962. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Alzina died in Vancouver on May 28, 1984. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

“T.H. McGown Dies; Shipbuilding Official,” Vancouver Sun, February 20, 1942, page 2:

“T.H. (Tom) McGown, 3887 West Fourteenth Avenue, timekeeper with the B.C. Marine Engineers & Shipbuilders Ltd., and a well-known and popular figure in maritime circles, died suddenly Wednesday.

Mr. McGown served overseas in the First Great War, an on his return to Canada became associated with the above company in 1918. Later he went south to work in California, and returned two and a half years ago to once more join the B.C. Marine Engineers & Shipbuilders.

He leaves his mother; a son, Tom. With the RCAF, and a daughter, Peggy.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.”

“Death occurred Wednesday of Thomas Howey McGown, 48, of 3887 West Fourteenth. Mr. McGowan was employed in the B.C. Marine Company, and was well known to shipping men.

Born in Vancouver, son of Mrs. McGowan [sic] and the late James McGown, pioneer residents of this city, Mr. McGown attended Dawson and King Edward schools and McGill University.

Mr. McGown served overseas with the 69th Batters, C.E.F., returning to Canada on the Empress of Asia.

He had been in poor health for some time before this death.

Surviving are a son, Bert, R.C.A.F., Montreal; a daughter, Margaret, at home; his mother, Mrs. James McGown, Vancouver; a brother, James, in Kamloops; two sisters, Jessie at home and Mrs. S. Beckett in Ontario.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. from Nunn & Thomson Funeral Chapel, with Rev. James Evans officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery, Burnaby.”
