William Alexander Campbell was a salesman with Dixon Motors, which was a Ford dealership in Vancouver.

He lived at 1900 Barclay Street in 1920 (although the directory listed him as “Wm. L. Campbell”).

 

 

Family Background

William Alexander Campbell was born in Marquette, Michigan on November 8, 1889. Marquette is on the south shore of Lake Superior.

Early Life

The published biographical information indicates that Malcolm Campbell came to British Columbia in the late 1880s, and to Vancouver in 1893.

At the time of the 1901 Canada census, Malcolm Campbell was a carpenter in Vancouver.

The first listing for Malcolm Campbell in the Vancouver directories appears to be 1902. He was living at 503 Gore Avenue, and he was a millwright at Royal City mill.

In 1911, the Campbell family was living at 1346 West Sixth Avenue. William was a commercial traveller with Oscar Brown and Company, who were wholesale fruit dealers.

In 1915, William was a salesman for Vancouver Trading Company, which was also a wholesale fruit dealer.

 

Marriage to Bernice Pool

On November 4, 1916, in Vancouver, William married Bernice Pool. She was born in Dutton, Ontario (Some sources say that she was born in 1889; others say that her birth year was 1891). Her parents were James Pool (1855-1924) and Martha Adelaide Moore (1862-1963).

 

Business Career

The 1920 Vancouver directory described William as an automobile salesman.

At the time of the 1921 Canada census, William and Bernice were living at 4678 West 14th Avenue. According to the census, William was a wholesale fruit dealer.

William was an automobile salesman throughout much of the 1920s.

In 1930, William became the president of the Sawdust Supply Company Limited.

Death of Bernice and Re-Marriage

Bernice died in Vancouver in December 1933. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On June 6, 1936, in Vancouver, William married Laura Grace Mitchell, who was a saleslady. She was born in Souris, Prince Edward Island on June 7, 1896. Her parents were Joseph Morton Mitchell and Jessie MacLeod.

 

Later Life

William continued to work as an automobile salesman for several years.

Helen Leona Campbell was born in Vancouver on September 4, 1917.

On September 21, 1935, in Vancouver, she married Alexander Smith, who was a geologist. He was born in Tacoma, Washington on June 1, 1907. His parents were Alexander Smith and Annie Young.

Malcolm Miller Campbell was born in Vancouver on September 24, 1923.

In October 1946, in Vancouver, he married Bernice Edna (“Bunny”) Hawley. She was born in Vancouver on ???. Her parents were Leonard Frank Hawley (1892-1968) (sometimes called (“Frank Leonard Hawley”) and Edna Clara Field (1901-1929).
