Allen, George Bertram (1890-1950)

George Bertram Allen was a barber at 1218 Denman Street from 1913 to 1914. He lived at 1001 Seymour Street.

In 1915 and 1916, both his barber shop and his home were at 1184 Denman Street.

 

Family Background

George Bertram Allen was born on May 12, 1890, in Hamilton, Ontario. His parents were Gerard Allen and Mary Cripps. Gerard Allen was a blacksmith.

 

To Vancouver

George arrived in Vancouver about 1913, and he established himself as a barber at 1218 Denman Street.

 

Marriage to Mary Cobbe

On December 9, 1914, in Vancouver, George married Mary Cobbe. She was born on September 18, 1884, in Ireland. Her parents were Charles Cobbe and Mary Gross. Charles Cobbe was a farmer.

 

To Regina, Saskatchewan

By about 1920, George and Mary were living in Regina, Saskatchewan. George was a barber.

In 1926, Mary and her daughter, Valerie, travelled to Ireland.

Later Life

The Allens returned to Vancouver by about 1930. George was a barber in the Hotel Vancouver barber shop until the mid-1940s.

George died in Vancouver on October 22, 1950. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mary died in Coquitlam, British Columbia, on May 23, 1969. She was also buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Valerie Fay Allen

Valerie Fay Allen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on September 6, 1920.

She married Gordon H. Spratt. This marriage ended in divorce.

Valerie worked as a stenographer in the family court.

She died in Vancouver on December 9, 1997.
