George Hugo Smith was the manager of the Great North Western Telegraph Company of Canada. He lived at 1008 Denman Street in 1901 and 1902.

 

Family Background

George Hugo Smith was born on November 8, 1860, in the United States, probably in Shell Rock, in southern Minnesota. (His parents and older siblings were in Shell Rock at the time of the 1860 United States census.)

George’s father was Hugh Mitchell Smith (1819–1894). In 1860, he was a farmer in Minnesota. The family later lived in Sarnia, Ontario, where Hugh was the county clerk for Lambton County. He died in Sarnia on January 20, 1894.

George’s mother was Margaret Jane McCall (1835-1907). She died on September 20, 1907, in Ruskin, British Columbia (which later became part of Maple Ridge).

George Hugo Smith

In 1871 George was living with his parents in Sarnia, Ontario.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1899-1900. He was a Western Union telegraph operator, and he was rooming at 550 Georgia Street.

He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1901 and 1902 1008 Denman Street (listed as 1808 under Vancouver names)
1903 to 1911 1762 Robson Street
1912 to 1925 2710 St. Catherines Street

 

By about 1900 he was an operator with the Great North Western Telegraph Company.

In the 1901 Canada census, he was living with his mother and his sister, Hilda.

By 1903 he was the Vancouver manager of the Great North Western Telegraph Company.

On April 18, 1906, an earthquake and fire devastated San Francisco. George advertised free telegraph messages for relief organizations and public officials.

He continued as a telegraph operator until about 1912.

By 1913 he was operating a grocery store at 401 Keefer Street.

He continued as a grocer until the mid-1920s.

It appears that he never married.

He died in Vancouver on January 5, 1925. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
