John Benjamin Bright was a civil engineer and railway contractor. He lived at 1949 Barclay Street in 1911 and 1912. He was at 1943 Comox Street from 1914 to 1919.

He was born on June 27, 1860, in Woolsthorpe, Grantham, Lincolnshire, England. His father was James Bright; his mother was Harriet Ann Walker.

After studying engineering in England, he came to Canada about 1882. He joined the engineering staff of the Canadian Pacific Railway, first in Winnipeg, Manitoba; he worked in the railway’s mountain division until 1888. Later he worked for railroads in Oregon, Idaho and Washington. After his return to Canada, he became an engineer of roads and bridges with the federal Public Works Department. After 1897, he worked on another series of railways in Canada, along with irrigation work in southern Alberta.

On June 29, 1907, in Nicola Valley, British Columbia, he married Mabel Amelia (“Queenie”) Hardiman. (He gave his address as Blaine, Washington State.) Mabel was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 21, 1886. Her father was Theophilus Richard Hardiman (1851-1928); her mother was Mary Theresa Hallam (1852-1926).

In 1911, John was the president of the Rainy River Gravel Company.

In August 1915, he enlisted as a Captain in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. (The enlisting documents gave his birth year as 1873, rather than 1860.) After the war, he resumed his occupation as a civil engineer until about 1925. In 1919, he became a justice of the peace.

He was a member of the Terminal City Club, as well as the Mountain Lodge Number 9 of the Masons. He was interested in fishing and shooting.

By 1943, he was living in West Vancouver, British Columbia. He died in Vancouver on April 18, 1943. He was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver.

Mabel died in Langley, British Columbia, on August 9, 1972.
