Stuart, Whitfield Walker (1860-1927)

Whitfield Walker Stuart was a lumberman. He lived at 1974 Georgia Street from 1904 to 1907 and at 1825 Robson Street from 1908 to about 1916. His son, Grover Franklin Stuart, was at 1829 Robson Street in 1918.

 

Family Background

Whitfield Walker Stuart was born in New Brunswick (possibly in Hillsboro) on November 30, 1860 (although some sources say he was born in 1858 or 1859). His parents were John Stuart and Annie Steeves (or Steves). (Whitfield’s family name sometimes appears as “Stewart” or “Stuart”.)

In 1871 and 1881, Whitfield was living with his parents in Albert County, New Brunswick.

 

To Massachusetts

By 1886, Whitfield was living in Boston, Massachusetts, and he was working as a carpenter.

On May 7, 1886, in Boston, he married Annie Gertrude Dickson. She was born in Boston on April 13, 1866. Her parents were Nicholas and Bertha Dickson.

 

To British Columbia

By 1891, Whitfield was in New Westminster, British Columbia. It appears that he was working as a farmer in Dewdney, British Columbia, in 1898.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1898. He was living at 519 Barnard Street, and he was working as a carpenter.

By 1908, Whitfield had moved to 1825 Robson Street. He built a larger structure at the corner of Georgia Street and Chilco Street.

Annie died in Vancouver on November 23, 1916. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Marriage to Cecilia Perriman

On April 17, 1918, in Vancouver, Whitfield married Cecilia May Perriman.

Cecilia was born in Adelaide, South Australia, on May 17, 1878. Her parents were George Perrimanand Elsie Hanna Underwood. George Perriman was an artist.

 

Car Accident

On August 1, 1920, Whitfield was driving a car that was involved in an accident with a motorcycle, killing the two motorcycle passengers.

The inquest concluded that the motorcycle’s excessive speed was the cause of the accident.

In October 1920, the mother of the motorcycle driver sued Whitfield for damages.

The jury in the trial was unable to agree on who was at fault, and a series of procedural court applications followed.

Final Days

Whitfield died at 2645 West 43rd Avenue on August 11, 1927. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Whitfield and Annie had the following children.

 

Mabel Gertrude Stuart

Mabel Gertrude Stuart was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 30, 1887.

On July 3, 1907, in Vancouver, Mabel married Charles Akitt Johnson, who operated a hotel and livery business. He was born on April 30, 1878, in Eugenia, Ontario. His father was Edward Johnson. Charles’s mother was Sarah Akitt.

Charles died in Essondale, British Columbia, on July 25, 1942. He was buried in Woodlands Memorial Garden in New Westminster, British Columbia.

Mabel may have been married to J.A. Crowe and living in Montreal, Quebec in 1927.

At this time, no further information is available for Mabel.

 

Beatrice Marion Stuart

Beatrice Marion Stuart was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 11, 1890.

On September 1, 1911, in Vancouver, Beatrice married Robert Thompson Moore, who was a broker. He was born about 1888 in Ontonagon, Michigan. His parents were Thompson B. Moore and Matilda Shererd.

Robert and Beatrice later lived in Seattle, Washington, along with their son, Robert S. Moore.

Beatrice died in Seattle on November 30, 1938.

 

Grover Franklin Stuart

Grover Franklin Stuart (also known as Grover Cleveland Stuart) was born in British Columbia, probably at Mission Junction, on December 3, 1892.

He worked for a time as a salesman for the Begg Motor Company.

On June 9, 1917, in New Westminster, British Columbia, Grover married Agnes Ellen Laird. She was born in Spokane, Washington, on December 10, 1894. Her parents were Alexander Laird and Agnes Kirk. Alexander Laird was a missionary.

Agnes died in Vancouver on March 8, 1924. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

On September 24, 1924, in Ferndale, Washington, Grover married Lillian Beatrice Stewart. (Her birth surname was spelled “Stewart.”) She was born about 1906. Her parents were Arthur Hamilton Stewart (1861-1929) and Agnes Griffin.

Grover died in Vancouver on March 28, 1956.

Lillian died in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 18, 1971.

Grover and Lillian had a son named Grover Hamilton Stuart.

 

It appears that Whitfield and Cecilia had two children.

 

Cicely Lorraine Stuart

Cicely Lorraine Stuart was born in Brisbane, Australia on September 10, 1918.

On December 30, 1942, in Vancouver, she married Francis Gerald Nanson, who was an aircraft production engineer. He was born in Vancouver on September 19, 1918. His parents were William Henry Francis Nanson and Ethel Elizabeth Freeland.

Whitfield Manfred Perriman Stuart was born in Vancouver on December 20, 1919.

He was living in Vancouver with Whitfield and Cecilia in the 1921 Canada census.

He married Bessie Dolina Macaulay, who was a teacher. She was born in Lacombe, Alberta, on July 30, 1921.

Whitfield died in Burnaby, British Columbia on January 6, 1990.

Bessie died in Burnaby on January 14, 1993.

He was predeceased by his parents, Grover Franklin Stuart, and Lillian Beatrice Stuart, and his wife Mary Ellen. Grover is survived and will be dearly missed by his daughters Teresa MacIntosh (Ken) of Winnipeg and Diane Stuart (Dirk Trigg) of Kamloops; son Wayne Stuart (Maryanne) of Nanaimo; grandchildren Michael, Shannon, Shaun, Adam, Sabrina, Merissa and Elysha, as well as great-grandchildren Alexander, Dakota and Ashton and his buddy Taz. He served proudly with the RCAF in both Canada and Europe, seeing service in England during World War Two. For many years Grover was well-known as manager of the Comox Valley Food Bank, was a longtime member of Branch 160, Royal Canadian Legion Comox and recently joined the Evergreen Seniors. In his leisure, he enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, particularly camping, hunting and fishing and thoroughly enjoyed his many trips to Reno. A Service of Remembrance in celebration of Grover’s life will take place from Branch 160, Comox Legion on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 2:00 pm. For those wishing, donations in his memory to the Comox Valley Food Bank, P.O. Box 3028, 1755-B 13th Street, Courtenay, BC V9N 5N3 would be appreciated.”
