Frank Arthur Anderson Barrs was an architect and cricket player who lived at 1819 Robson Street in 1919 and 1920.

 

Family Background

Frank Arthur Anderson Barrs was born on April 24, 1871, in Repton, Derbyshire, England. His parents were Henry Barrs (1834-1893) and Elizabeth Ann Grace Davy (or Davey) (1839-1923). Henry Barrs was a farmer and horse-breeder.

Early Life

Frank studied architecture in England. He was a pupil of Thomas Gibbs of Burton on Trent. He later worked with Tomlinson and Company, which was a firm of architects and engineers in Derby. Marriage to Georgina Lake

In 1898, Frank married Georgina Lake. She was born in Lincolnshire on December 7, 1873. Her parents were James Lake (1826–1882) and Fanny Shillaker (1836–1890).

Frank and his family came to North America in August 1907.

They moved to South Dakota in 1908, although they stayed there only a short time before moving to Vancouver.

 

Business and Sport in Vancouver

Shortly after the Barrs family arrived in Vancouver, Frank established himself in business and sporting activities.

He had been a cricket player in England, and he continued to play cricket while he was in Vancouver.

Frank became a member of the Hastings Park Exhibition Association in 1908.

In 1910 he was the superintendent at the exhibition grounds, and he was living at 1169 Parker Street.

By 1912, he had established an office in the Bank of Hamilton Building.

In 1913, he was in an architectural and engineering firm with Samuel Bernard Dean Shewbrooks.

From 1914 to 1928 he was the director of the Vancouver School Board, and he designed many of the city’s schools.

 

Later Life

Frank retired about 1929.

Georgiana died in Coquitlam, British Columbia, on March 16, 1949. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Frank died in Vancouver on December 16, 1963. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Grace Emily Mildred Barrs

Grace Emily Mildred Barrs was born about 1899 in Ticknall, Derbyshire.

On June 15, 1926, in Vancouver, she married Joseph Wallace Weeks. He was born on March 3, 1896, in Toronto, Ontario. His parents were Caleb Weeks and Mary Dorothy Dunne. He had served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Both Joseph and his father were plumbers.

Joseph died in Vancouver on July 10, 1958. He was buried in Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Frances Evelyn Barrs

Frances Evelyn Barrs was born in March 27, 1901 in Repton, Derbyshire.

She married William Paul Falconer.

Frances died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on December 15, 1956. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

William Paul Falconer later married Elva Ellen Litherland (1924-1976).

 

Margaret Barrs

Margaret Barrs was born in Bromley, Kent, England, on May 3, 1903.

On February 6, 1937, she married Ralph Edwin William Gwyther. He was born in India on December 24, 1893. His parents were Henry Thomas Gwyther and Elizabeth Mary William.

Ralph worked as an insurance underwriter and banker. He died in Vancouver on August 31, 1955.

Margaret died in Delta, British Columbia on June 27, 1983.

 

Annie Lake Barrs

Annie Lake Barrs was born on December 27, 1908 in Redfield, South Dakota.

On September 6, 1936, Annie married Frederick James Wood. He was a professional golfer, who was born in New Westminster, British Columbia on February 10, 1906. His parents were Frederick William Arthur Wood and Vivian McKie.

Frederick died in Vancouver on November 2, 1984.

Annie died in Vancouver on March 25, 1992.
