James Duncan Irvine was an inspector for the British Columbia branches of the Bank of Montreal.

He lived at 1949 Barclay Street from 1913 to 1915.

Family Background

James Duncan Irvine was born in Ontario on June 16, 1872. His parents were Joseph Craw Irvine and Cornelia White.

Joseph Irvine died on December 15, 1888 in Regina, which was then part of the North-West Territories.

By 1891, the family was living in Moose Jaw, which was then in Assiniboia West in the Northwest Territories. James was living with his widowed mother, and he was working as a bank clerk. His older sister, Mary, and his two younger brothers, Joseph Hume Irvine and Andrew Balfour Irvine, were also living in Moose Jaw.

James’s mother, Cornelia Irvine, died in Montreal, Quebec  in 1921. She was buried in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Marriage to Winifred Bodington

On August 10, 1898, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, James married Winifred Brooke Bodington. She was born on July 29, 1877 in Kingswinford, Staffordshire, England. Her parents were George Fowler Bodington (1828-1902) and Alice Brooke (1840-1897).

In 1888, Constance Eaton Bodington, Winnifred’s sister, married Lauchlan Alexander Hamilton, who laid out much of the survey of Vancouver. See: Street Layout and Street Names; https://westendvancouver.wordpress.com/historical-background/geography-and-street-layout/.

Banking Career

James was a bank manager and an inspector with the Bank of Montreal. The bank transferred him to several locations, including Winnipeg, Calgary, Portage la Prairie, Indian Head, and Vancouver.

Financial Post (Toronto, Ontario), July 8, 1911, page 5, column 3.

After 1915, the information for James is sparse.

According to the 1920 United States census, Winifred and her daughter,  Allix, were living in Boston, Massachusetts. They had moved to the United States in 1920. The census form said that Winifred was married.

However, in the 1921 Canada census,  Winifred was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with her daughter, Rosalind. The census form said that Winifred was widowed.

When Winifred and Rosalind returned to Boston from a trip to England in 1925, Rosalind said that her contact person in England was J. D. Irvine, in care of the Bank of Montreal in London, England. This person was probably her father, James.

It appears that James died died before 1949.

Winifred died on December 31, 1949, after she was struck by a motor vehicle in Victoria, British Columbia.
