Mansel Hay Thorburn was a clerk with the steamship department of Balfour Guthrie and Company. He lived at 1859 Robson Street in 1917 and at 1901 Haro Street in 1918.

Mansel Hay Thorburn was born in Midlothian, Scotland on July 26, 1885. His parents were John Hay Thorburn (1847-1931) and Jane Mansel (1853-1930).

John and Jane were married in Newcastle-on-Tyne on December 11, 1879.

In 1891, Mansel was living with his parents in St. Andrew, Midlothian, Scotland.

In 1901 he was with his parents in Leigh, Midlothian, Scotland.

On January 5, 1907, he became an indentured apprentice in the British merchant navy.

Mansel arrived in Canada in 1910. He sailed on the Lake Champlain, and he arrived in Quebec City, Quebec, on his way to Vancouver, where he was intending to work with a railway company. (The passenger list called him “Manuel.”)

On June 10, 1911, in Vancouver, he married Annie Smallman. She was born on September 5, 1877, in Enville, Staffordshire. Her parents were Charles Smallman (1851-1936) and Jane Smith (1850-1933).

Mansel first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1912. He was living at 2430 Point Grey Road, and he was working as a clerk with Evans Coleman and Evans.

Travel to China

Sometime after 1918, Mansel went to China. Annie and the Thorburn children also went to China, although they seem to have travelled separately from Mansel.

In 1919, Annie sailed from Montreal, Quebec, to Liverpool, England, along with her sons, John, David and Robert.

Annie died in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on March 24, 1963.

John Hay Thorburn

John Hay Thorburn was born in Vancouver on May 26, 1912.

He went with his parents to live in China.

In 1931, he became the centre of an international incident in China. At first he was simply missing.

He remained missing for several weeks.

After several diplomatic discussions and many detailed investigations, the Chinese authorities determined that a Chinese colonel had shot John. The colonel received a sentence of fourteen years in prison. John’s body was never found.

David Hay Thorburn was born on March 27, 1915, probably in Vancouver.

He died on October 4, 1988.
