Thomas Albert Evans was a seaman for much of his life, and was later a clerk and janitor at the Bank of British Columbia. He lived at 1859 Comox Street from 1906 to 1912. His son, Leonard Victor Evans, was at 1859 Comox Street from 1914 to 1928.
Thomas was born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, in November 1838 (some sources say November 11 or November 17). He was a seaman in the British Navy for several years.
In 1861, in Plymouth, Cornwall, he married Margery Taylor Couch. She was born on September 29, 1840, in Launceston, Cornwall.
By 1871, Thomas and Margery were living in Llandaff, Glamorganshire, Wales. Thomas was a seaman.
In 1881, Thomas and Margery were living at 4 Mozart Street in West Hartlepool, Stranton, Durham, England. [Mozart Street was formerly connected to Green Street. It appears that Mozart Street no longer exists.]
In 1885, Thomas appeared in Kelly’s Directory of Hartlepool and West Hartlepool. He was a mariner, and was living at 19 Bailey Street.
By 1891, he had arrived in Vancouver, and he was living at 320 Harris Street (District Lot 196, Block 88, Lot 10). He and his family were in the 1891 Canada census:
In 1892, Thomas was a still describing himself as a mariner. By 1895, he was a clerk for the Bank of British Columbia. In 1901, he was a janitor at the Bank of British Columbia.
By 1906, Thomas was working as a watchman for the British Columbia Electric Railway.
From 1908 to 1910, he was a night guard and caretaker for the Dominion Detention Hospital at the C.P.R. wharf.
By 1911, he was retired.
Thomas lived at 320 Harris Street until 1902. From 1903 to 1905, the directories show him at 348 Harris Street, although it appears that this was just a change in the house numbering, and not a move to a new house. About 1900, the Royal Soap Company was just down the street, at the corner of Harris Street and Gore Avenue.
Harris Street became part of East Georgia Street in 1915.

By 1906, Thomas had moved to 1859 Comox Street.
Thomas was an active member of the Orange Order, and he was the chaplain of the Orange Order from about 1903 to 1916.

Margery continued to live at 1859 Comox Street. She died in Vancouver on May 18, 1928. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Thomas and Margery had the following children.
William Henry Evans
William Henry Evans was born on June 7, 1863, in Newport, Wales.
He worked as a stationary and marine engineer.
On January 15, 1893, in Vancouver, he married Isabella Elzora Brown. She was born in November 9, 1875 (some sources say November 11), in Spaniard’s Bay, Newfoundland. Her father was Thomas Brown. Her mother was Mary Vokey.
In 1900, William and Isabella were living in Plymouth, Massachusetts. William was working as a stationary engineer.
In 1911, William was living at 1257 East Harris Street in Vancouver and was a marine engineer.
In 1916, he was with the federal government dredging department.
In 1921, he was at 1680 Union Street.
He continued to work until he retired about 1940.
He died in Vancouver on February 8, 1942. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Until about 1946, Isabella worked as a maid at the Vancouver General Hospital.
Isabella was briefly married to Thomas Fillingham, who was a widower. Thomas was born on November 7, 1884, in Wigan, Lancashire. He had been married to Edith Minnie Barrett (1882-1940).
Isabella died in Vancouver on March 16, 1946. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Thomas Fillingham died in Vancouver on May 10, 1971.
Herbert Edward Evans
Herbert Edward Evans was born in Newport, Wales on July 22, 1866. He worked as a barrel maker and later as an engineer on steam engines.
On July 7, 1897, in Vancouver, he married Emma Baxter. She was born on Windham Road, London, England, about 1870. Her parents were John and Emma Baxter.
Herbert died in Vancouver on March 11, 1945. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Emma died in Vancouver on August 22, 1950. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby.
Thomas Albert Evans
Thomas Albert Evans was born in Wales on February 3, 1869.
He was living with his parents in Vancouver in 1891, and was working as a seaman.
He was still living with his parents in Vancouver in 1901. He was working as a photographer.
No further information is available for him at this time.
Ernest Edgar Evans
Ernest Edgar Evans was born in Cardiff, Wales on June 9, 1871 (some sources say March 4, 1862). He worked as a painter, hardware merchant and later as a “commercial traveller” or salesman.
On October 4, 1898, in Vancouver, he married Georgina Cooper McQueen. She was born in Galt, Ontario. Her parents were William McQueen and Alice Mulholland.
Ernest died in Vancouver on March 17, 1921. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Georgina died in Kelowna on May 13, 1955. She was buried in the Kelowna Cemetery.
Walter Frederick Evans
Walter Frederick Evans was born in Cardiff, Wales on June 28, 1873.
On May 22, 1901, in Vancouver, he married Flora Mary Johnson. She was born on September 3, 1881, in Karachi, India (now Pakistan). Her father was Lt. Colonel Lacey Robert Johnson (1855-1915). Her mother was Maria Anne Warburton (1857-1940).
Walter was a musician who played the organ at Christ Church when he was young. He later formed a music company called Dyke, Evans and Callaghan.

Walter supported the local symphony and arranged for several famous musicians and singers to perform in Vancouver.
In the mid-1920s, he built the Devonshire Apartment Hotel at the northeast corner of Georgia Street and Hornby Street. (The address varied between 849 and 875 West Georgia Street; sometimes it was both: 849-875.)
Walter was a member of the Vancouver Club and the Capilano Golf Club.
He died in Vancouver on February 26, 1949. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
On September 22, 1951, Flora married James Horace King, a federal senator who was the speaker of the Senate from 1945 to 1949. He died in Ottawa on July 14, 1955.
Flora died in Vancouver on June 23, 1967. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.
Leonard Victor Evans
Leonard Victor Evans was born in West Hartlepool, Durham, England, on October 8, 1875.
He worked as a piano tuner.
He never married.
He died in Vancouver on December 29, 1943.
He was buried in Forest Lawn Burial Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Olive Bernice (Annie) Evans
Olive Bernice (Annie) Evans was born in West Hartlepool, Durham, England, on September 26, 1882.
On November 16, 1905, in Vancouver, Olive married George Wilfitt Cripps, who was a real estate and insurance broker.
George Cripps was born in Croydon, England, on January 31, 1876. His father was Thomas Henry Cripps (1847-1940). His mother was Susannah August Webb (1849-1941). When the family moved to Canada, they first lived in Montreal, Quebec. In 1891, they were at 2412 St. Catherine Street in Montreal.
They were at 380 Green Avenue in Montreal in 1899.
By 1900, the Cripps family had arrived in Vancouver; they were at 1014 Eveleigh Street. George’s father, Thomas, was working as an accountant for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
In 1905, George was working as the secretary for the Home Building Association. He was rooming at the New Fee Block at 585 Granville Street. Later that year, he moved to the Vancouver brokerage firm of J.J. Mulhall & Company. (James Joseph Mulhall was the father-in-law of Frank Burnett (Junior), who lived at 1877 Comox Street from 1911 to 1913.)
Shortly after their marriage, George and Olive moved to 2061 Beach Avenue in Vancouver. They were there from 1906 to 1909.
By 1911, they moved to 1743 Robson Street. George was working as a manager for the F.H. Lantz Company, which was an insurance and brokerage business.
Fraser Harry Lantz (1870-1936), the president of the company, was married to George’s sister, Mabel (who died on January 24, 1912). The managing director of the company was Valentine Gerald Quinn (1879-1954).
George and Olive later lived at the following addresses:

On January 1, 1916, George enlisted as a lieutenant with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He gave his occupation as “fire insurance broker.” He said that he was born on January 31, 1878.
While George was taking a horse riding class in Vernon, British Columbia, in August 1916, his horse fell on him, crushing his right foot. The injury severely limited his ability to work at manual labour, although he did go to England in November 1916, and served for three years in Europe. On November 9, 1918, he was wounded by a gunshot; about the same time he also suffered from a low level of poison gas. He stayed in hospital for five months, and eventually went back to Canada. On August 4, 1919, he was struck off strength for being “medically unfit.” He was awarded membership in the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.” (M.B.E.).
By 1921, George was working in Vancouver as an assessor for the British Columbia government.
In 1935, George and Olive moved to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, where George became the local appraiser for the British Columbia government. From 1935 to 1944, they lived in number 4 of the Waldron Apartments on West Fourth Avenue, near Emmerson Place.
George died in Prince Rupert on February 6, 1944. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
Olive moved back to Vancouver. She was living at 1925 Vine Street from 1945 to 1947.
By 1948, Olive was married to George William Robarts, who was a retired master mariner. He was born in Walton Nova Scotia, on September 23, 1872. His father was Thomas Robarts. His mother was Mary Tomilson.
George Robarts died in Vancouver on December 28, 1949.
Olive died in Vancouver on June 11, 1957.
George Willfitt Cripps and Olive Evans had two sons: Wilfred Newton Cripps (born about 1908) and George Leonard Cripps (1911-1982).
Charles Gordon Evans
Charles Gordon Evans was born on March 19, 1885, in Hartlepool district, Durham, England.
He was working as a piano tuner in 1911.
By 1940, he was living in Centralia, Washington State. He was working as a piano tuner. He was married to Sadie B., who was born in Michigan about 1882.
In 1942, Charles registered with the United States military draft registration system.
Charles died in Centralia, Washington State, in August 1980. He was buried Mountain View Cemetery in Centralia, Washington.

Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, 77 years ago, Mr. Evans, in early life served in the British Navy, coming to Vancouver 25 years ago, and being for many years associated with the Bank of British Columbia, only retiring from active life a few years ago.
One of the active members of the Orange Order, the late Mr. Evans for some thirteen years held the honorable office of chaplain, which he retained up to the time of his death.
A widow, six sons and one daughter are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and loving father, the sons being William, who is attached to the Dominion Government Dredging Department; Ernest, a member of the Kloepher Hardware Company; Walter F., of W.F. Evans & Co., Ltd.; Herbert, who is an old employee of the city, and Leonard and Charles Evans. The surviving daughter is the wife of Lieut. George. W. Cripps, who is attached for overseas service in the Duke of Connaught’s Own, 158th Battalion.”

King, of Vancouver, former Senate Speaker, died in Ottawa Civic Hospital at 12.05 a.m. EDT today. He was 82. Senator King was admitted to hospital June 20 with a heart condition. He later contracted pneumonia. He had lapsed Into unconsciousness five days ago and was placed In an oxygen tent. Hospital authorities said yesterday that he was no longer taking oxygen, out that his condition was still seriously ill. He passed away quietly just after the turn of midnight. His death reduces the Liberal standing In the Senate to 72 and Increases the number of vacant seats to 23. Conservatives hold the other seven of the Chamber’s 102-seats. Senator James Horace King was the first doctor to reach Frank, Alta., after Turtle Mountain collapsed in 1903 and killed 68 sleeping villagers. He may have been the model for Ralph Connor’s novel, “The Doctor”. His medical practice made him a beloved figure In Southwestern British Columbia and the Crowsnest Pass. But increasing activity in public affairs caused him to retire from active practice in the 1920’s. His political career took him to the British Columbia Legislature, -the House of Commons and the Senate. He held Cabinet posts in all three and served a four-year term as Speaker of the Upper Chamber. He was a robust man with a friendly disposition and a kindly manner. Born at Chipman, NB, January 18, 1873, he practised medicine both In the Maritimes and BC. He studied at McGill University and In Europe. But BC was the scene of his greatest activity. As a doctor he made a great impression in Cranbrook, BC, and through the Crowsnest while surgeon for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Connor never confirmed or denied the widely-held belief among Senator King’s friends and former patients that he was the hero of “The Doctor”, published in 1908. Closely allied with his medical work was his lifelong Interest in the St. John Ambulance Association which he founded In BC. He became a Knight of Grace of the Venerable Order. SENATOR J. H. KING, of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. Senator King’s political career began In 1903. He was a member of the BC Legislature from 1903-09 and from 1918-22 and was provincial works minister for four years. He went to Ottawa as Works Minister in 1922, undertaking to straighten out the accounts for reconstruction of the Parliament Buildings which were burned during World War L Also while Works Minister he opened Canada House In London In 1923 and was given the keys to the city. By this time he had given up active medical practice. He was one of the organizers of the Pensions Department and was Pensions Minister during the mid-twenties. His Interest in pensions never waned and in 1951 he served as co-chairman of the Parliamentary Committee which studied old age pensions. The other chairman was Jean Lesage, now Northern Affairs Minister. Senator King was appointed to the Senate in 1930 and was named Government leader there and minister without portfolio in 1942. He was speaker from 1945 to 1949.”

Cripps]: “One of Vancouver’s old-timers, Mrs. Thomas Cripps, 1528 Davie, died this morning at the Bayview Nursing Home after a month’s illness. She was 87 years of age and was the wife of the late Thomas Cripps, who died here last month at the age of 93.
Born in England, Mrs. Cripps came to Cnaada 55 years ago and came to Vancouver with her husband 45 years ago. She was for many years an active member of St. Paul’s Church Women’s Auxiliary.
Mrs. Cripps was a granddaughter of the man who for many years was private chaplain to Queen Victoria. She herself used to give swimming lessons to some members of the Royal family.
Her other grandfather was a lieut. Dewsnap, one of Nelson’s officers, who was wounded at Trafalgar
Until the death of her husband, Mrs. Cripps was in excellent health.
Mrs. Cripps is survived by two sons, Harry Cripps at home and George W. Cripps, provincial assessor at Prince Rupert, three grandsons, Wilfred Cripps of Vancouver, Leonard Cripps of Prince Rupert and Claude Lantz of Seattle; two great grandsons, Dale and Michael of Vancouver.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Center & Hanna. . . .four sisters, Mrs. JAMES h. Thompson of Prince Rupert; Mrs. George Loasby of Montana, Mrs. W. Wilber of Elmsdale, and Mrs. Dell Severn of Springfield, Mass.; one brother, Henry Miller, Elmsdale.
Funeral services will be held in the residence, 1605 Marpole avenue, on Monday at 3 p.m., with Rev. F.W. Norwood officiating. Burial will take place in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby. [sic: other sources say Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.]”

Cripps and Miss Olive Evans were the contracting parties at a largely attended wedding celebrated in Christ Church at 7 o’clock last evening. The ceremony was performed by the rector, Rev. C.C. Owen, and the friends of the happy couple crowded the church to the doors.
The bride, who is the only daughter of Mr. Thomas Evans, was attended by Miss Minnie Burdis and was given away by her father. The groom, who is a member of the real estate firm of J.J. Mulhall & Company, and is prominent in the Elks and other secret societies, was supported by Mr. Leonard Evans, brother of the bride. Mr. Walter F. Evans, another brother of the bride, presided at the organ, and rendered the Mendelssohn and Lohengrin Wedding Marches.
After the ceremony the bridal party repaired to the residence of the bride’s parents on Comox street, where a reception was held. The happy couple were the recipients of many beautiful presents, testifying to the esteem in which they are held by their many friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Cripps left on the steamer Ramona last night on a two-week’s honeymoon tour of the Sound cities.”

Mrs. Robarts came to Vancouver 62 years ago and was the sister of the late Walter F. Evans, one-time owner of the Devonshire Hotel and theatrical booking agent.
She married George W. Cripps, provincial assessor in Vancouver, New Westminster and Prince Rupert where he died several years ago.
She later married Captain George W. Robarts, one-time senior marine pilot in Vancouver.
Mrs. Robarts was an active member of IODE until she became ill.
She is survived by two sons, Wilfred N. Cripps of West Vancouver, with whom she made her home, and G. Leonard Cripps, of North Vancouver; and G. Leonard Cripps, of North Vancouver; two grandsons, one granddaughter and two great-grandsons; one brother, Charles Evans of Centralia, Wash.
Funeral service will be held in Center and Hanna’s George Chapel at 3 p.m. Friday, Rev. George Stegen officiating. Burial will be in Ocean View Burial Park.”
