  1. Here’s a bit more about George Westerdale Barker, son of William Henry Barker and Orpha Beard and his wife, Mary Hazel Heryford:

George W. Barker committed suicide on 19 March 1928. The Medford, OR paper (Mail-Tribute) of March 20-23, 1928 published a series of stories about GWB’s suicide along with assurances that the bank was still sound. GWB, apparently concerned about an audit of the Pine Belt Bank, of which he was the owner/manager (with wife Hazel and daughter Eleanore listed as directors), shot himself in the head at his fishing camp, not too far from Butte Falls. His suicide note read:

“My wife Hazel Barker, and daughter, Eleanore, who appear as directors of the Pine Belt Banking company, have never had anything whatsoever to do as directors. The bank was run entirely by me at all times. Gertrude Fredenberg, assistant cashier, was clerck only, and had no voice in its management.”

“If there is any blame attached to the management in any way, it is all mine. Therer has been no stealing at any time and there is plenty of property and other assets to pay all the depositors in full. The mistakes in judgment show that I am not the man for the place.”

“My heart’s love to wife and little ones. This worry is killing me and I hardly know what I am writing. Do not blame Hazel or Eleanore with anything as they know absolutely nothing bout it. George W. Barker March 19, 1928

The bank was taken over by the First National Bank of Medford. William Henry Barker (GWB’s father) provided financial support by purchasing $11,500 in bonds of the Eagle Point Irrigation district and $13,000 in property in Medford that the Pine Belt Bank held.

In 1929, Mary Hazel Barker filed a petition in the County Court, Lane County, Oregon to be appointed guardian of her three minor children: Orpha Eleanor (14), Mary Lorraine (11) and George Frederick (5) following the death of their father, George W. Barker. William Barker, Jr. (brother in law), Frederick A. Barker (brother in law) and A. T. Cockerline (William Barker , Jr.’s father in law or brother in law) were to be appointed as appraisers of the estate, which seems to have consisted of $606.90 cash and no household goods, land, house, or anything else.
