Henry James Stevens was a poultry dealer. He lived at 1857 Alberni Street in 1918 and 1919.

 

Early Life

Henry James Stevens was born in Hughenden, Buckinghamshire, England, on February 9, 1879. (He seems to have used both Henry and Harry as his given name.) His parents were Edwin Stevens and Sarah Taylor.

From 1881 to 1901 Henry lived with his parents in Hughenden. By 1901 he was working as a butcher.

 

To Canada

In 1904, Henry sailed to Canada. He arrived at Quebec City, on his way to Montreal.\

Marriage to Kate Greenwood

In the spring of 1906, in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Henry married Kate Greenwood. She was born in Wycombe on June 18, 1881. Her parents were Robert Greenwood and Sarah Newman Turner.

 

Return to Canada

In 1906, Henry and Kate sailed from Liverpool to Boston, Massachusetts, on their way to Toronto. Harry’s occupation was “poulterer.”

It appears that Henry worked for the Canadian Produce Company in Toronto in the early 1900s.

 

 

About 1911, Henry and Kate travelled to England. They returned to Canada in May 1911, landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in May 1911. Their destination was Vancouver. The immigration document said that they had earlier been in Canada from 1903 to 1910, including time in Toronto and Vancouver.

By 1916 Henry’s poultry business was at 901 Granville Street.

He continued in the poultry business until he retired in 1946.

He was a member of Melrose Lodge of the A.F. & A. M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons) and the Gizeh Temple.

Kate died in Vancouver on November 13, 1945. She was buried in “The Abbey” at Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Henry died in Vancouver on November 1947. He was buried in “The Abbey” at Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Mary Bernice Stevens

Mary Bernice Stevens was born about 1912 in British Columbia, probably in Vancouver. (She was often called “Bernice.”)

She married Jack Knights.

In 1945, Jack and Bernice were living in Bamfield, British Columbia. In 1946 they went to Australia. They returned to Canada in 1947.
