Later Years

There is little evidence that Arthur and Amy were both back in Vancouver before the end of the war. Thynne and Albutt still appeared in the Vancouver directories until 1920, but Arthur did not have an individual listing during that time.

Arthur sailed from England to New York in 1917, on his way to Vancouver. He was planning to stay at the Vancouver Club.

In 1919, Arthur and Amy sailed from England to Halifax. It is not clear if they also travelled to Vancouver at that time.

Arthur appeared in the Vancouver directories from 1927 to 1930. However, in 1928, he also used the British Empire Club in London, England, as an address.

Subject: [Q-R] JONES and LE PAILLEUR connection

Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 13:58:11 -0500

Hello,

A contact in Australia was interested in the family of Maria Ann JONES, who married John Banner PRICE. I found their marriage at the Garrison Church in Montreal in 1834. John Banner PRICE was the Assistant Commissary General. The witnesses were Thomas Walter JONES, M.D., and George ARCHBOLD. The Rev. George ARCHBOLD of Cornwall, Ontario, married Charlotte Maria JONES at Christ Church Montreal in 1834. Again, Thomas Walter JONES was a witness. I suspect that these three JONES’ were siblings.

An on-line search for Thomas Walter JONES yielded an interesting snippet. This is an extraction from a debate held in the National Assembly in 1989:

“However, the most incredible of all stories is that of the grandson of the first born child of English speaking parents in Montreal, Thomas Walter Jones. His story is the story of the quintessential Quebecker. The family name was Jones, but his mother’s name was Le Pailleur. Thomas Jones commanded the Royal Montreal cavalry while Jean-François Le Pailleur was a loyal supporter of the Patriots and was engaged in the many battles along the south shore of Montreal.

Following the end of the battle, Jean-François Le Pailleur was arrested and charged with treason. Representation was made on his behalf by his cousin Thomas Walter Jones and the charge was dropped. Jean-François went on to become a successful Montreal businessman while Thomas Jones returned to his life as a country doctor.”

My contact would be most interested to find out more about the JONES family, and in particular the comment about the first child born of English-speaking parents in Montreal, and the connection to the LE PAILLEUR family. I have not located the baptisms of any of the JONES individuals named above in the non-catholic records, but given the mother’s name they may have been baptized in the Catholic church. There are references found on-line to Charles Hugh LePailleur JONES (1876-1949), whose name suggests a connection, but I have traced back to his great-grandparents and cannot find a link to LEPAILLEUR.

Maria Ann JONES, widow of John Banner PRICE, died in Nottingham, England in 1883, and her body was returned to Montreal for burial in Mount Royal Cemetery, with the funeral from Christ Church. Thomas Walter JONES died in 1864 and is also buried in Mount Royal Cemetery.

Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome!

Keith in Montreal”
