Kingshott, Mary Ann (1887-1952)

Mary Ann Kingshott was a clerk with the baking firm of Hoy and Sons at 740 Denman Street in 1913 and 1914. She lived at 4840 Lanark Street from 1913 to 1915.

Vancouver Daily World, February 16, 1912, page 12, column 4.

In 1915 she was an employee with Ramsay Brothers, a wholesale confectionery firm.

Mary Ann Kingshott was born in Liphook, Hampshire, England, on August 4, 1887. Her parents were James Kingshott (1861–1893) and Sarah Gates (born 1861- died possibly 1947).

She appears to have arrived in Vancouver about 1913.

On September 1, 1915, she travelled on the Great Northern Railway to Washington State.

On September 14, 1915, she married Andrew Milne at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Everett, Washington. Andrew was born in Alyth, Scotland, on November 14, 1884 (or 1883). He had been married before, and he had a daughter, Margaret, who was born on August 16, 1910, in Dundee, Scotland.

Mary and Andrew took over the Colby Bakery at 2228 Colby Avenue in Everett. The previous owner had been an active supporter of union workers, and advertised regularly in The Commonwealth, an Everett-based paper whose motto was “For Socialist News and Propaganda.” (After Andrew and Mary took over the bakery, they did not advertise their business in The Commonwealth.)

In 1918, Andrew registered with the United States military draft system.

In 1919, Mary and Andrew were still living at 2228 Colby Avenue in Everett, when Andrew filed a declaration to become a naturalized United States citizen.

Before Andrew was able to get his citizenship, he died in Everett on March 20, 1922. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Everett.

Mary became the administrator of Andrew’s estate.

In 1922, Mary filed a notice of intention to become a naturalized United States citizen. She was living at 2101 Colby Avenue in Everett, and she was the proprietor of the Colby Bakery. She became naturalized on September 14, 1922.

In 1924, Mary applied for a United States passport so she could travel to visit relatives in England. She was planning to travel with her minor child, Joan, who was born at Everett, Washington, on September 29, 1918.

Mary and Joan did travel to England. They sailed back home from Southampton, and arrived in New York City on October 4, 1924.

On June 16, 1926, Mary Ann applied for a licence to be married to Oden Hall.

Oden was born in Staffordshire, England on August 23, 1884. His parents were Oden Hall (1860-1939) and Fanny Jacques (1855-1928).

Oden was the park superintendent for the City of Everett. Mary continued to operate the bakery. In the 1930 United States census they were living in Everett, along with Mary’s daughter, Joan, who was called “Joan Hall.”

Oden died in Everett on December 27, 1938. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Everett.

In 1940, Mary Ann was living in Everett with Joan. Mary Ann’s sister-in-law, Bertha Forrest, was also living with them.

Mary Ann died in Everett on December 9, 1952. She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Everett.

Besides her step-daughter, Margaret Milne, it appears that Mary Ann had one daughter. (There are references to two names, both born on the same day: Joan Amelia Milne and Euphemia Amelia Milne. It is not clear if they are separate, or if they are the same person with different names.)

Joan Amelia Milne (sometimes Joan Hall)

Joan Amelia Milne was born in Everett, Washington, on September 29, 1918. She was later called “Joan Hall.”

In 1924, she travelled to England with her mother.

In 1930 and 1940 she was living with her mother in Everett.

In 1941 she was a clerk with Agnew Hardware in Everett.
