Gabriel Thomas, Junior was a cigar maker. He lived at 1931 Robson Street from 1899 to 1902 and from 1904 to 1905.

 

Family Background

Gabriel Thomas was born on October 25, 1870 in Ophir, Nevada. His parents were Gabriel Thomas, Senior (1838-1915) and Jane Bee Brenner (1840-1933).

The Thomas family arrived in Vancouver in 1886.

In the 1890s, Gabriel Thomas, Senior was the proprietor of the Oriental Hotel on Water Street.

Gabriel’s Early Life in Vancouver

Gabriel arrived in Vancouver with the rest of the Thomases in 1886, not long before the Great Fire.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1887. He was a cigar-maker with Kurtz and Company.

Gabriel was sometimes known as “Gabe” or “Gaby.” He was an early member of Vancouver’s volunteer fire brigade.

Marriage to Emma Weiss

On December 28, 1892, in Vancouver, Gabriel married Emma Anne Elizabeth (“Lizzie”) Weiss. She was born on December 12, 1872 in Baden (Waterloo), Ontario.

Emma’s parents were William Weiss (1834-1909) and Gottliebe (or Godlove) Damitz (1835-1902).

Gottliebe Weiss died in Vancouver on November 2, 1902.

From the 1890s to about 1911, Gabriel was a cigar maker.

In 1909 he received a permit to build a new apartment building at the northwest corner of Davie Street and Bidwell Street.

Stettler Cigar Factory

At the time of the 1916 Canada census of Canada’s Prairie Provinces, Gabriel was living on Callaghan Street in Stettler, Alberta, and working as a cigar maker.

The Stettler Cigar Factory’s main products were Van Loo and Van Dyck cigars.

After the Stettler Cigar Factory became insolvent, Otto Robert Brener (1868-1930) purchased Stettler Cigar’s assets and formed the Van Loo Cigar Company.

That company was the subject of legal proceedings, in which Fred Carder claimed that he was entitled to receive half of the new company’s shares.

Throughout this period, Gabriel and many other employees continued to make cigars, first at the Stettler Cigar Company and later at the Van Loo Cigar Company.

Emma’s Death and Gabriel’s Later Life

Emma died in Vancouver on March 12, 1922. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

From 1924 to 1931, Gabriel was again the proprietor of the Aldine Apartments at 1199 Bidwell Street.

He continued to live in the Vancouver area from the 1930s to the 1950s. He died in Vancouver on March 3, 1960. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Gabriel and Emma had the following children.

 

Emma May Thomas

Emma May Thomas was born in Vancouver on February 12, 1894.

On March 21, 1918, in Vancouver, she married Christopher George Behnsen. He was born in Oakland, California on December 15, 1881. His parents were Henry Frederick William Behansen and Elizabeth Reade. It appears that this marriage ended in divorce. Christopher later married Selena Cutler. Christopher died in Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia on October 24, 1964.

On April 21, 1923, in Vancouver, Emma married James Thomas Buss, who was an electrical contractor. He was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia on November 25, 1893. His parents were George Buss and May Ellen Crottie. James had been married before, in 1916, to Annie Marguerite Callaghan. (The marriage certificate described Emma as a spinster, which was probably incorrect.)

James died in Vancouver on February 1, 1944. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Emma died in Essondale, British Columbia on July 17, 1961. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Gabriel William Thomas

Gabriel William Thomas was born in Vancouver on July 3, 1895. (He was often called “William.”)

He worked as a commercial artist.

He married Bertha Florence Beatrice Bush. She was born in London, England on May 15, 1904. Her parents were George Bush and Elizabeth Martha Bagon.

Bertha died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on December 10, 1979.

William died in North Vancouver on January 7, 1987.

 

Alva Violet Bee Thomas

Alva Violet Bee Thomas was born in Vancouver on April 16, 1905. (Some references call her “Alba Beatrice Jame Thomas.”)

On February 22, 1925, in Victoria, British Columbia, she married Edward (“Ted”) Alfred Francis Garrard He was born in Port Alberni, British Columbia on September 30, 1900. His parents were Edward Burdett Garrard and Eleanor Mary Watson.

Edward died in Vancouver on March 20, 1934. He was buried in Bellingham, Washington.

Alva died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on August 16, 1991.

 

Iris Marguerite Thomas

Iris Marguerite Thomas was born in Vancouver on May 28, 1910.

On July 17, 1934, in Quesnel, British Columbia, she married Bernard Henry Gallie. He was born on March 9, 1902 in St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. His parents were Henry William Gallie (1874–1952) and Laura Edith Pinel (1877–1979).

In 1935, Bernard was a mechanic with the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company in Wells, British Columbia. Later, Iris and Bernard lived in Vancouver and on Bowen Island.
