Alexander McRae was a sea captain. He lived at 1844 Georgia Street in 1904.

 

Family Background

Alexander McRae was born in Lachalsh, Ross and Cromerty, Scotland on August 5, 1863. His parents were Alexander McRae and Annabella Finlayson.

Alexander married Catherine McLean, who was born in Dores, Inverness, Scotland on April 26, 1870. Her parents were Alexander McLean and Mary (May) Forbes.

Catherine and the McRae children arrived in Canada in 1903. They had travelled from Liverpool to Quebec City, on their way to Vancouver. (Alexander may have arrived in Canada somewhat earlier.)

She died in Vancouver on August 23, 1961.

 

Alexander McLean McRae

Alexander McLean McRae was born in Inverness-shire, Scotland on May 26, 1895.

He did not marry.

On October 19, 1915, in Vernon, British Columbia, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

He died of wounds on August 20, 1918. He was buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension in Somme, France.

 

Marjory Forbes McRae

Marjory Forbes McRae was born in Glasgow, Scotland on September 14, 1897.

She did not marry.

She died in Vancouver on September 10, 1977. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Charlotte McRae

Charlotte McRae was born in Inverness, Scotland on October 4, 1899.

She worked as a bookkeeper.

On June 1, 1922, in Vancouver, she married John James Corrigan, who was a clerk. (He was sometimes called “James.”) He was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 17, 1895. His parents were William Corrigan and Sarah Jane Armstrong. James had served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

Charlotte and James went to live in North Carolina. James was a secretary and treasurer for the Slane Hosiery mill in High Point, North Carolina.

Charlotte died in North Carolina on November 1, 1950. She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in High Point.

Ian Forbes McRae

Ian Forbes McRae was born in Vancouver on July 24, 1904.

He became a professional engineer.

He was married to Selena (“Lena”) Gertrude Johnston, who was born in 1904.

From 1957 to 1966, he was the chairman of the board of Canadian General Electric. In 1958 and 1959, he was the president of the Canadian Manufacturers Association. He later became the commissioner of Ontario Hydro.

Ian died in Toronto on October 14, 1970. He was buried in Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough, Ontario.

Selena died at Don Mills, Ontario on March 12, 1977. She was buried in Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough.

Douglas Finlay McRae

Douglas Finlay McRae was born in Vancouver on June 1, 1907.

He married Gladys Whiteside (née Young). She was born in Newcastle on Tyne, England on December 25, 1903. Her parents were Thomas Meek Young and Alice Cairns. Gladys’s earlier marriage was on November 10, 1923, to Ernest Evelyn Whiteside (1898-1952).

Douglas died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on May 18, 1959. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Gladys died in Nanaimo, British Columbia on August 5, 1995.

 

William Fraser McRae

William Fraser McRae was born in Vancouver on December 9, 1909.

He married Margaret Jane Leigh.

William died in Port Alberni, British Columbia on November 2, 1986.

 

Kenneth Allan McRae

Kenneth Allan McRae was born in Vancouver on February 12, 1912.

He worked as a bookkeeper for Credit Foncier Company Limited.

He did not marry.

He died in Tranquille, British Columbia on July 25, 1937.
