From the Cranbrook Herald of Thursday February 22, 1912 (P8C1), page 8, column 2, via the UBC historical newspapers website:

DEATH OF FRED H. SMALL

It is with very great regret that the Herald records the untimely death of Frederick Hughes Small, a nephew of Mr. E.H. Small, of this city. Fred Small was well known throughout the city, having lived here a good deal as a youngster, and having been located here during the last two years. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Small, of Vancouver, and was aged 23 years and 7 months. At the time of his death, due to heart failure, his parents, a sister, Mrs. C. Speer, and a brother, Sidney Small, were with him. Another brother and sister were at the family home in Vancouver.

Young Small had for several years past been engaged as a jockey, and in that capacity had established an enviable record on Western Canadian tracks, as well as the states of Montana and Washington. He rode the winner of the Calgary derby two years ago. He also held the record of having ridden the fastest mile ever ridden on the Vancouver track.

His early demise was undoubtedly due to over training. He was physically fit in every respect, save for his heart.

He was taken ill about Christmas time and despite the tenderest care and most skilful medical attention death claimed him as its own last Saturday.

The funeral took place last Monday afternoon, and was very numerously attended. Rev. C.O. Main officiated, the funeral arrangements being in charge of W.R. Beatty.

The pall bearers were Jas. Kennedy, F. Murphy, C. McEachern, R. Naife, S. Morris and E. Davis.

The coffin was covered with a profusion of beautiful flowers, tokens of love and respect from many friends in this city and outside points, among the most beautiful of the wreaths were the following, from Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Bowness, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Murray, H.E. Baristo, the Beattie-Murphy Co., Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hoggarth, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Hall, Mrs. Robichaud, Dr. and Mrs. King, and one from Spokane.

Widespread regret was expressed throughout the city at the news of Fred Small’s death. He was extremely popular among a large circle of acquaintances. A bright, clean, athletic young man, and a sportsman of the very best type.
