Cox, Herbert Charles (1874-1931)

Herbert Charles Cox was a janitor and night foreman at the Vancouver Courthouse. He lived at 1872 Georgia Street from 1919 to 1923, at 1890 Georgia Street from 1924 to 1925, and at 1822 Alberni Street from 1926 to 1931.

He was born in Wiltshire, England, on November 3, 1874. His father was George Cox.

He married Esther Webb, who was born on November 20, 1871, in London, England.

After arriving in Vancouver in 1911, Herbert lived at the following addresses:

1914 1894 West Second Avenue
1915 to 1918 1058 Harwood Street
1919 to 1923 1872 Georgia Street.
1924 to 1925 1890 Georgia Street
1926 to 1931 1822 Alberni Street

Herbert died in Vancouver on June 30, 1931. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Esther died in Vancouver on June 21, 1958. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Herbert and Esther had the following children.

 

Edith Janet Cox

Edith Janet Cox was born in Seend Cleeve, Wiltshire, England on February 13, 1896.

For a time, she worked as a telephone operator.

On November 10, 1938, in Vancouver, Edith married Eric I’Anson Grisdale, who was a carpenter and later a building superintendent. He was born in Whiteley Bay, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England on May 25, 1897. His father was Joseph William Grisdale (1867-1918). His mother was Alice Mary l’Anson (1870-1951).

Edith died in Vancouver on November 1, 1982. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Eric died in Vancouver on July 5, 1988. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

 

Herbert George Cox

Herbert George Cox was born in Seend, Wiltshire, on June 29, 1897.

He married Christina Gertrude Calbick. She was born in Steveston, British Columbia, on July 23, 1898. Her father was Thomas Fawcett Calbick (1864-1927). Her mother was Mary Ann Lawrence (1867-1917).

In the mid-1920s, Herbert worked for Standard Furniture Company Limited. He later worked as a truck driver.

Herbert died in Vancouver on November 14, 1983.

Christina died in Vancouver on October 3, 1985.

 

Winifred Cox

Winifred Cox was born in Seend, Wiltshire, in 1902.

On August 11, 1924, in Vancouver, Winifred married Richard Alvin Ludlow, who worked for Imperial Oil. He was born on February 6, 1896, in Cloverdale, British Columbia. His father was Richard Alvin Ludlow (1852-1935). His mother was Emily Ogden (1858-1940).

Richard died in Port Moody, British Columbia, on June 8, 1985.

Winifred died in Port Moody on August 7, 1990.

 

Kenneth Denison Cox

The 1921 Canada census described Kenneth Cox as a ward of Herbert Charles Cox.

Kenneth was born in British Columbia on January 3, 1921.

During the Second World War, he served for four years as a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was reported missing after an air operation. He was later presumed dead as of January 3, 1945.

His name appears on the Singapore Memorial, at Kranji, North West, Singapore.
