Chace, Annie Maria (1852-1913)

Annie Maria Chace (née Weston) was the widow of Earl Bradford Chace. She lived at 744 Gilford Street in 1906.

Family Background

Annie Maria Weston was born about 1852 in New York State. Her parents were John L. Weston and Anna Maria Healy.

On February 19, 1879, in Manhattan, New York, Annie married Earl Bradford Chace, who was a dry goods merchant. Earl was born on February 4, 1849, in Cumberland, Providence, Rhode Island (although some sources say that he was born in Massachusetts). His parents were Bowers S. Chace and Fanny S. Bradford.

In 1880, Earl and Anna were living in Orange, Essex, New Jersey, along with their daughter, Ella. Earl was a dry goods merchant.

In the 1880s, Earl B. Chace and Co. were general New York managers for the J.R. Pease Furnace Co., of Syracuse, New York, and Toronto, Ontario.

Montclair Times (Montclair, New Jersey), June 19, 1886, page 2, columns 7-8.

However, Earl’s career did not last. On July 17, 1890, the New York Times published a story on his business problems:

“Earl B. Chace, doing a plumbing and steam-heating business at 206 Water Street as Earl B. Chace & Co., made an assignment yesterday to Henry A. Rice, giving a preference for $3,700 borrowed money to his father, Bowers S. Chace of Providence. The business was begun about seven years ago as Chace & Cooper, and in December, 1884, Mr. Cooper withdrew, the firm becoming Earl B. Chace & Co. The elder Mr. Chace was the Co., and, it is said, furnished the capital. He withdrew in May, 1889, and gave his interest to his son, who was supposed up to a short time ago to be very successful. Earl B. Chace said last March that he was worth $70,000, and his present difficulty arises, it is supposed, from his too free acceptance of notes from the speculative builders for whom the most of his work was done. Mechanics’ liens amounting to $10,500 have been filed in Brooklyn against Mr. Chace, and three judgments for $2,835 were entered by the J.L. Mott Iron Works Company yesterday.”

On July 19, 1890, the Real Estate Record and Builders’ Guide judgment list included six judgments against Earl B. Chace.

The New York Evening World’s edition of October 18, 1890, published a short story that Earl B. Chace, aged 41, of 2304 Seventh Avenue, was under arrest in Brooklyn, charged with stealing $550 belonging to a Baptist church in Brooklyn.

In 1891, Henry Rice, as Earl’s assignee, went to court to recover some of the promissory notes that Earl had accepted from his debtors. The court gave a judgment in favour of Mr. Rice.

In 1892, Earl B. Chace and Co. still appeared in the New York City Record and Building Trades Directory as a dealer of stoves, furnaces and ranges. Their business address was 206 Water Street in New York City.

The New York health department recorded that Earl died in Saratoga Springs on September 6, 1899.
