Joseph Dodd Allan was a  a real estate broker. He was also interested in photography, and took photographs of the Yukon gold rush. He lived at 1860 Comox Street from 1911 to 1914.

Joseph Dodd Allan was born in Perth, Ontario, on October 20, 1879. His father was Thomas Allan; his mother was Sarah Dodd. [Further information on the Allan family appears under the entry for Thomas Allan, who lived at 1872 Barclay Street from 1910 to 1914.]

On February 20, 1904, Joseph married Florence Arkle. She was born on September 13, 1879, in Sunderland, England.

Florence died on February 12, 1947, in Vancouver.

Joseph later married Ella Eleanor Niebergall. She was born on October 29, 1883, in Phillipsburg, Ontario. Her father was John Niebergall; her mother was Lydia Lohn.

Joseph died in Vancouver on July 10, 1960.

Ella died in Vancouver on January 19, 1966.

“J.D. Allan, Vancouver Province, July 12, 1960, page 12: Joseph Dodd Allan, a well-known early day realtor here, who did photography during the Yukon gold rush, will be buried Wednesday. Mr. Allan, 82, of 1998 West Forty-fifth died Sunday. He sold property on the west shore when waterfront lots at West Bay sold for only a few hundred dollars and sold property in Lynn Valley in 1910 when the going price was $500 for an acre. A native of Perth, Ont., Mr. Allan came to Vancouver in 1887. He took pictures of the gold rush for a photographic equipment shop on Hastings St. In 1905, with his two brothers, Mr. Allan formed Allan Brothers real estate. He later went into partnership with Boultbee and Company, which was subsequently merged with Macaulay, Nicolls, Maitland & Co. Ltd. Family: his wife Ella at home; two sons Dalton and Eric, both of Vancouver, one daughter, Mrs. Herber Cutler of Stewkley, Busck, Engl and six grandchildren. Services: Wednesday at 2 p.m., St. Marty’s Anglican Church, Kerrisdale; Rev. F.J. Nicolson, assisted by Rev. R.l. Armitage. Burial in Mountain View.”
