Stewart Loutit was a machinist at Albion Iron Works. He lived at 2052 Beach Avenue from 1909 to 1911.

 

Family Background

Stewart Loutit was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 7, 1886. His parents were James Irvine Loutit (1860-1923) and Runa Swanson (1866-1959).

James Loutit first arrived in Vancouver in 1887.

The Loutit family lived on the north side of Robson Street’s 1100 block until the 1920s.

For many years, James was the chief clerk in the Canadian Pacific Railway’s freight department.

In August 1900, he resigned from the C.P.R. to become an agent for the Lake of the Woods Milling Company.

James was still with the Lake of the Woods Milling Company in 1919.

He died in Vancouver on December 21, 1923. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Stewart Loutit

Stewart first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1903. He was living with his parents at 1123 Robson Street and working as an apprentice with Vancouver Engineering Works.

By 1908, Stewart had become a machinist at Albion Iron Works Limited.

By 1912, Stewart was working for Cameron and Hesketh, whose business was at 1737 Georgia Street.

In 1913 he began his career with Western Machine Works at 1705 Georgia Street. By 1918 he was a foreman. He continued to work with Western Machine Works until the 1950s. In 1955, he was a manager with the company. He retired about 1956.

 

Private Life

On March 11, 1908, in Vancouver, Stewart married Isabel Nixon. She was born in Dublin, Ireland on August 11, 1883. Her parents were James Nixon and Mary Cummings.

Isabel died in Essondale, British Columbia on January 7, 1940.

On January 29, 1940, Stewart married Julia Mezzo, who was a hairdresser. She was born in Hungary on November 29, 1906. Her parents were Louie Mezzo and Esther Gall.

Stewart was a skilled hunter and trapshooter, who won prizes from the time of the First World War to the 1950s.

In October 1970, Stewart applied for a Pioneer Medallion. The provincial government awarded these medallions to people who were born or resident in Canada before January 1, 1897.
