William Ronald Hermann Stokes was a dentist. He lived at 1020 Denman Street in 1919 and 1920 and at 1040 Denman Street in 1921 and 1922. (He was sometimes called Hermann Stokes, W.R. Stokes, Ronald Stokes, or Ron Stokes.)

 

Family Background

William Hermann Ronald Stokes was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, England, in 1882.

In 1891 he was living in Birmingham with his mother, Matilda, a widow who worked as a button maker.

 

Marriage to Minnie Cutler

On February 23, 1905, in Ryde, Hampshire, England, William married Minnie Rebecca Cutler. She was born on October 7, 1873, in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, England. Her parents were Henry Cutler and Elizabeth Blackwell.

 

To Canada

William and Minnie moved to Canada about 1906.

By mid-1907, William was probably living in Manitoba, when his daughter, Valerie, was born in Winnipeg.

In 1911 he was a cigar merchant and pool room operator in Revelstoke, British Columbia.

He studied dentistry at North Pacific College in Oregon, and he received a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in May 1917.

 

To Vancouver

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1919. He was living at 1020 Denman Street.

He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Later Life

William continued his dental practice until the 1940s.

Minnie died in Vancouver on April 4, 1944. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

In 1946, William established a dental practice in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

He married Nancy (Nina) Brown, and they lived on Gabriola Island for many years.

In 1964, he went to live on the Canary Islands.

Valerie Evelyn Ella Stokes was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on July 31, 1907.

In 1911 and 1921 she was living with her parents.

Valerie married George Wilson Alger.

Valerie died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on April 6, 1968. She was buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Nanaimo.
