George’s Early Life

In 1881, George was living with his parents in the Kensington area of London. By 1891 the family was in Barnes in Surrey.

From 1894 to 1897, George was a student in Thomason House at Haileybury College

From 1898 to 1901 he was articled to Thomas Edward Collcutt, a well-known English architect. George also studied at the Architectural Association Schools.

He also took art classes at the Royal Academy.

About 1905 he went to work for the Public Works Department in Pretoria, South Africa.

On April 19, 1906, in Sunnyside, Pretoria, George married Hilda (sometimes spelled “Hylda”) Fisher. She was born on December 17, 1885, in Gorleston (which was then in Suffolk; later boundary changes made it part of Norfolk). Hilda’s parents were William Fisher and Alice Jane Ballard.

George’s work in South Africa came to an end fairly quickly because of an economic downturn. He and Hilda went to England, where they heard of an opportunity to work in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Instead, they went to Montreal, where George worked briefly with the architectural firm of Saxe and Archibald.

1955 Thompson, Berwick, Prat.
1990 Hemingway Nelson Architects

The firm built dozens of well-known commercial and institutional buildings, religious structures, and residences, both in Vancouver and elsewhere in British Columbia. A small selection includes:
