In June 1908, William and Jennie were in Prince Albert when their daughter, Ethel, was born.

By March 1911, William and Jennie were in Barton Township, which later became part of Hamilton, Ontario.

From 1915 to 1917, William and Jennie were in Edmonton, Alberta. William was an agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.

In late 1915, William enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

It appears that he was back in Edmonton by 1917. Shortly afterward, the Hullah family moved to Vancouver.

 

To Vancouver

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1920. In 1920 and 1921, he was living at 742 Denman Street, and he was working as a carpenter.

Later Life

William and Jennie lived in the Vancouver area through the 1930s and 1940s.

Jennie died in Riverside, California, on January 17, 1948. Shxe was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

William later married Jane Sarah Maynard (sometimes called “Sarah Jane”).

William died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 11, 1957. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Ethel Gertrude Hullah

Ethel Gertrude Hullah was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, on June 6, 1908.

On December 11, 1934, in Vancouver, Ethel married Reginald Percy Weavers, who was a milk salesman with Associated Dairies Limited. He was born in Croydon, England on March 3, 1905. His parents were Percy and Mary Weavers.

Ethel died in Vancouver on January 24, 1979.

Reginald died on June 25, 1986. He was buried in Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

 

Arthur Leslie Hullah

Arthur Leslie Hullah was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on March 3, 1911. He became a contractor.

On June 26, 1934, in Vancouver, he married Olive Gwendoline Atkins. She was born in England about 1911. Her parents were Stanley Richard Atkins and Alice Elizabeth Squirrell. This marriage ended in divorce in New Westminster, British Columbia, on November 4, 1947.

Arthur later married Dorothy Mae Adams. She was born on July 8, 1919, in Cabri, Saskatchewan. Her parents were Clifford and Della Adams.

Arthur died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 22, 1963.

Dorothy later married Howard Douglas Cleveland. He was born in Vancouver on July 7, 1913. His parents were Ernest Albert Cleveland (1874-1952) and Sarah Catherine Mackechnie (1880-1952). Howard had been married before, to Jean Isabel Bogardus (1914-1965).

Howard died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on November 25, 1978.

Dorothy died in West Vancouver on August 8, 2005.

 

Irene Edith Hullah

Irene Edith Hullah was born in British Columbia, probably in Vancouver, on February 4, 1918.

She married Allan D. Huleatt. He was born in Washington State on January 13, 1917. His parents were Dale Frederick Huleatt (1889-1958) and Elizabeth Zystra (1892-1960).

Allan died in Seattle, Washington, on June 14, 1978. He was buried in Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle.

Irene died on May 3, 1994. She was buried in Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle.

 

Norman William Hullah

Norman William Hullah was born in British Columbia, probably in Vancouver, about 1920.

On May 14, 1943, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, he married Margaret Jean Mcdougall, who was a stenographer. She was born in Colorado about 1922. Her parents were Bertram Wellington Ware Mcdougall and Margaret Morse Church. This marriage ended in divorce.

He became a successful contractor and builder. His company was N.W. Hullah Construction Company. He developed a large project called Norgate in North Vancouver. He also built many of the first houses in Kitimat, British Columbia.

On April 20, 1960, in Riverside, California, Norman married Mary Paula Falcon (Williams). She was born on October 23, 1923.

Norman died in Washington State on June 8, 1979.

Mary died on June 7, 2013.

“Contractor W.T. Hullah dies at 73,” Vancouver Province, June 12, 1957, page 2:

West Vancouver—Prominent building contractor William Thomas Hullah will be buried Thursday.

He died Tuesday in North Vancouver General Hospital at the age of 73. He was the father of Vancouver contractors Norman and Arthur Hullah.

A native of Bradford, Eng., he came to Vancouver in 1917 and entered the contracting business. He retired six months ago.

Mr. Hullah was a member of the Elks Club and the West Vancouver Bowling Club. He lived at 1590 Kings.

Besides his sons, he is survived by his wife, Sarah Jane; two daughters, Mrs. R.P. Weavers, of Vancouver, and Mrs. A.D. Huleatte, of Seattle; and three grandchildren.

Rev. Duncan Ritchie will conduct the service at 1:30 p.m. in Hollyburn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.

Dorothy Mae Cleveland, death notice, Published in Vancouver Sun on Aug. 12, 2005: “CLEVELAND—Dorothy Mae, born in Cabri, Saskatchewan on July 8, 1919, the daughter of Clifford and Della Adams. She passed away peacefully after a relatively short illness, on August 8, 2005 in West Vancouver. She was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Leslie Hullah on July 22, 1963 and her second husband, Howard Douglas Cleveland on November 25, 1978. A long-time resident of Kew Beach in West Vancouver followed by a number of years in Edgemont Village in North Vancouver and of course a good number of years of extended stays in Marbella, Spain. Dorothy will be missed by her extended family and friends. A special word of thanks to the staff at Amica West Vancouver for the care and attention she received during her final few weeks. There will be a service in the Chapel of St. Catherine’s Anglican Church, 1058 Ridgewood Drive, North Vancouver, B.C. at at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 17, 2005.”

Her positive & caring demeanor will be deeply missed by family and friends. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at Johnston Heights Church (9612 152 St, Surrey) Friday, June 14th at 3PM.
