Thomas A. Wakefield was a broker, an automobile dealer and a confectioner.

 

Family Background

Thomas Alexander Wakefield was born on December 24, 1870, in Belton, Bell County, Texas. (Belton is about 90 kilometres north of Austin, Texas.)

Thomas’s parents were William Alvin Wakefield (1848-1921) and Gertrude Josephine Howard (1852-1915).

Gertrude Wakefield died in Los Angeles County, California on April 21, 1915.

William Wakefield died in Long Beach, California on August 23, 1921.

Early Life

In 1880, Thomas was living with his parents in Bell County, Texas.

In the 1880s, the Wakefields moved to Washington Territory, which became a state in 1889.

 

Marriage to Lou Gordon

On December 24, 1889, in at Shaw Island, San Juan County, Washington, Thomas married Lucillah (“Lou”) Marion Gordon. She was born in Deer Creek, Minnesota in October 1870. Her parents were Samuel M Gordon (about 1847-1931) and Frances R Colby (1845-1933).

In 1900, the Wakefields were still living at Shaw Island.

According to the 1910 United States census, Thomas and his family were in Bellingham, Washington. The census indicated that Thomas was a marine master.

In 1911, the Bellingham directory listed Thomas as a realtor in Bellingham, Washington. The Wakefield family was living in the Chuckanut Addition region of Bellingham.

However, a United States consular registration certificate said that Thomas arrived in Vancouver on November 15, 1910, and that he was living in the Cedar Cottage area of Vancouver in 1911.

William and Lou were divorced by about 1912. Lou died in Bellingham on April 3, 1915.

 

Marriage to Mabel Allen

On January 7, 1913, in Seattle, Thomas married Mabel Allen. She was born Bertha Mabel Divine in Ireland about 1874-1879. Some sources say that she was Mabel; others call her Bertha.

In Vancouver

According to the Vancouver directories, Thomas was at 1097 Richards Street in 1913.

He operated a confectionery at 1974 Georgia Street in 1914 and 1915, and he lived at that same address during those years.

In 1915 he also had an automobile business at 1462 Georgia Street, between Broughton Street and Nicola Street.

 

Return to Washington

Thomas returned to live in Washington State.

He and Mabel had twin sons who were born in Washington in 1918.

In 1920, the Wakefields were in Snohomish County in Washington.

The 1921 newspaper obituary for Thomas’s father, William Wakefield, said that Thomas was in Saskatchewan in 1921, but there is no other information that confirms this.

In 1930, Thomas and Mabel were in Seattle.

Thomas’s and Mabel’s marriage ended in divorce. (Mabel died in Sedro Woolley, Skagit, Washington on March 4, 1949.)

 

To California

Thomas later lived in California.

During much of the 1940s he lived with the family of Leo Weil at 383 Chester Avenue in San Francisco.

He died in San Francisco on March 5, 1951. His car was found abandoned on the Alemany viaduct which crossed Junipero Serra Boulevard. His body was found in the centre lane of the southbound lanes on Junipero Serra Boulevard. The
