Burton, Amos Josiah (1869-1959)

Amos Josiah Burton was the manager of the A.J. Burton Saw Company. He lived at 1961 Comox Street in 1907.

He was born on February 17, 1869, in Margaree, Inverness, Nova Scotia. His father was William Thomas Burton; his mother was Rhoda Ann Hart.

On April 25, 1890, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, he married Annie May Beal. She was born on March 27, 1866, in Sackville, New Brunswick. Her parents were George and Sarah Beal.

By 1900, Amos and Annie were living in Millstone Township in Elk Country, Pennsylvania. Amos was a mill filer.

About 1903, the family came to Vancouver, where Amos started the A.J Burton Saw Company at the corner of Powell Street and McLean Drive. From 1904 to 1911, the Vancouver directories show the Burton family at a series of residences in Vancouver:

1904 and 1905 1056 Hornby Street
1906 1654 West 9th Avenue
1907 1961 Comox Street
1908 to 1911 1523 Comox Street
1912 “resident in Ottawa”

By 1913, Amos was living in Ottawa, Ontario, at 257 Daly Avenue. The A.J. Burton Saw Company’s branch location in Ottawa was at 374 Sparks Street. H. Gordon Davis was the local sales manager.

Amos’s son, Hawley Forest Burton, married Hilda Julia Fairburn in Ottawa in 1922.

About 1922, Amos and Annie moved to Eugene, Oregon, where Amos and his son, Fred, continued to supply services and supplies to the wood products industry.

Amos and Annie continued to live in Eugene until the 1950s.

Annie died in Eugene on July 5, 1958. She was buried in Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

Amos died in Eugene on January 24, 1959. He was buried in Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.
