Burton, Amos Josiah (1869-1959)

Amos Josiah Burton was the manager of the A. J. Burton Saw Company. He lived at 1961 Comox Street in 1907.

 

Early Life

Amos Josiah Burton was born on February 17, 1869, in Margaree, Inverness, Nova Scotia. His parents were William Thomas Burton and Rhoda Ann Hart. (Amos was often called “A. J. Burton.”)

On April 25, 1890, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, he married Annie May Beal. She was born on March 27, 1866, in Sackville, New Brunswick. Her parents were George and Sarah Beal.

By 1900, Amos and Annie were living in Millstone Township in Elk Country, Pennsylvania. Amos was a mill filer.

 

To Vancouver

About 1903, the family came to Vancouver, where Amos started the A.J Burton Saw Company at the corner of Powell Street and McLean Drive.

To Ottawa

By 1913, Amos was living in Ottawa, Ontario, at 257 Daly Avenue. The A.J. Burton Saw Company’s branch location in Ottawa was at 374 Sparks Street. Hurlburt Gordon Davis was the local sales manager.

 

To Oregon

About 1922, Amos and Annie moved to Eugene, Oregon, where Amos and his son, Fred, continued to supply services and supplies to the wood products industry.

Amos and Annie continued to live in Eugene through the 1940s and 1950s.

In 1940, they had their 50th wedding anniversary.

Annie died in Eugene on July 5, 1958. She was buried in Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

Amos died in Eugene on January 24, 1959. He was buried in Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.
