Henderson’s Greater Vancouver Directory, 1922, page 441.

William Edward Ainley was a physician who lived at 1865 Barclay Street from 1921 to 1965.

William Edward Ainley was born on July 2, 1878, in Lockport, Nova Scotia. His father was the Rev. William Ainley (1848-1921), who was a Methodist clergyman. William Edward Ainley’s mother was Sarah Elizabeth Turnbull (1853-1933).

In 1901, William was a student in Montreal. In 1904, he received an M.D. from McGill University in Montreal.

On June 28, 1913, in Ottawa, Ontario, William married Edith March Orme. She was born in Ontario on September 2, 1878. Her father was George Lewis Orme. Her mother was Alice Burnett Hunton.

William served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Salonika during the First World War. He suffered from many health issues, and he was transferred to England and eventually to the Canadian Army Medical Corps. In 1919, he was discharged in the general demobilization.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1919. He was living at 1310 Jervis Street.

William lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1919 to 1921 1310 Jervis Street
1921 to 1965 1865 Barclay Street

Edith died in Vancouver on April 24, 1921.

On October 4, 1923, in Vancouver, William married Jean Rowan Bell (née Geddes), who was a widow. She was born in Scotland in October 1878. Her father was David Geddes. Her mother was Helen Robertson.

William maintained his medical practice until the mid-1950s.

Jean died in Vancouver on October 2, 1957.

William later married Constance Victoria Joy. She was born on January 24, 1901, in Nelson, British Columbia. Her father was Robert George Joy, who was a baker. Constance’s mother was Beatrice Arthur.

William died in Vancouver on April 1, 1965.

Constance died in Vancouver on May 14, 1981.

William and Edith had at least one son. However, the sources refer to two different names, so it is possible that there was more than one son. Another possibility is that one of the names refers to another person altogether.
