Bramwell, William (1872-1929)

William Bramwell was a cabinet maker, a policeman, and later the chief of police for South Vancouver. He lived at the rear of 1917 Pendrell Street in 1908 and 1909.

He was born in England on October 12, probably about 1872 in the small town of Calthwaite, Cumberland, England, on October 12. His father was Robert Bramwell; his mother was Alice Bimson. He served for ten years with the Lancashire county police.

In September quarter, 1901, in Dalton in Furness, Lancashire, he married Helen Fairhurst. She was born on December 21, 1871, Lancashire, England. Her father was Fred Fairhurst.

By 1903, William and Helen were living in Brandon, Manitoba. William was a packer for Vincent & Macpherson.  George W. Vincent and Ritchie Macpherson had a “furniture and undertaking” business.

By 1908, they were in Vancouver, living at 1917 Pendrell Street. William was working as a cabinetmaker for the Standard Furniture Company. This company was on the north side of West Hastings Street, next door to David Spencer’s department store. Spencer’s bought the both business and the building in 1911.

By 1911, William was working as a municipal policeman. From 1911 to 1915, he was a sergeant with the South Vancouver police force. From 1915, he was the chief of the force.

In 1916, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. (He gave his birth year as 1878, which was somewhat later than his real birth year.)

After the war, he returned and became a sergeant with the South Vancouver police force.

William died in South Vancouver on March 8, 1929. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park, in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Helen died in Vancouver on December 7, 1942. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park, in Burnaby.

William and Helen had the following children.

Norman Bimson Bramwell

Norman Bimson Bramwell was born on September 8, 1902, in Penwortham, Preston, Lancashire, England. In his younger years he was a mechanic; later he became a taxi driver and dispatcher.

On November 7, 1928, in Vancouver, he married Alice Eva Anderson.  She was born about 1904 in Jaffray, British Columbia. Her father was John A. Anderson; her mother was Axia Pearson. This marriage was dissolved in Vancouver on October 25, 1935.

By 1950, Norman was married to Evelyne Pearl Buck. It appears that she was born Evelyn Hilda Buck, about 1898. Her father was James Theodore Buck; her mother was Eliza Martha Aldouse.

On November 7, 1924, in Vancouver, Evelyn had married John August Louis Gildemeister, a widower originally from Holland. This marriage was dissolved in Vancouver on June 27, 1950.

Norman died in Vancouver on October 10, 1967. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park, in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Clarence Hector Bramwell (often called “Hector”)

Clarence Hector Bramwell was born on February 22, 1903, in Brandon, Manitoba. He became a school teacher.

On September 10, 1925, in Vancouver, he married Jane Margaret Middleton. She was born on PEIL 2, 1906, in Manchester, England. Her father was Samuel Joseph Middleton (1865-1935); her mother as Emma Hoyland (1866-1944).

Jane died in Vancouver on December 11, 1933. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Clarence later married Lillian Alvine Hemrich.

Clarence died in Kelowna, British Columbia, on May 23, 1985.

Stanley Fairhurst Bramwell

Stanley Fairhurst Bramwell was born on October 22, 1907, probably in British Columbia, though some sources say that he was born in Washington State.

By 1930, it appears that he was living in San Francisco, California. In 1940, he was living in San Francisco and working as a bartender and clerk in a fishing club. He served with the United States Army.

He died in San Francisco on August 30, 1997. He was buried in Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, California.
