Duncan Mackenzie was a master mariner. He lived at 1925 Pendrell Street from 1905 to 1909.

 

Early Life

Duncan Mackenzie was born on June 12, 1863, in Kiltarlity, Inverness, Scotland. His parents were Roderick Mackenzie and Catherine McLean.

After arriving in Canada about 1884, he worked on ships on the Great Lakes. He later joined his brothers, William and Simon, on the west coast of North America.

By 1889, he was living in Vancouver, which served as the base for his shipping career.

From 1896 to 1911 he lived at the following addresses in Vancouver:

Marriage to Lizzie Armstrong

On July 12, 1898, at Port Haney, British Columbia, Duncan married Lizzie Houston Armstrong. She was born on June 6, 1876, in Bathurst, New Brunswick. Her parents were Thomas Armstrong and Hannah Matilda Smith.

Long Maritime Career

Duncan had a long career as a master mariner and ship’s pilot. His career was generally very successful. However, in 1920 he was the captain of the S.S. Prince Rupert when it struck a rock at Swanson Bay. The crew beached the ship so that it would not sink in deep water.

At high tide, the water came to the top of the ship’s pilot house.

A salvage team later built a cofferdam on the top of the ship. The team then raised the ship to tow it to the Yarrows shipyard at Victoria.

The members of the marine court reviewed the circumstances of the sinking. They concluded that the ship had been off course at the time of the incident, and they suspended the certificates of both Duncan and the ship’s first mate.

After an extensive re-fitting, the ship went back into service in May 1921.

Duncan withdrew from commanding ships and became a ship pilot. He retired in 1933.

Duncan died in Vancouver on March 10, 1943. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Lizzie died in Vancouver on August 22, 1963. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Lillian Jean Mackenzie was born in Vancouver on June 9, 1900.

On September 24, 1926, in Vancouver, she married Paul Henry Farmer, who was a marine engineer. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland on May 21, 1896. His parents were Paul Henry Farmer and Rachel Macdonald.

Lillian died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 12, 1981.

Flora Roda Mackenzie

Flora Roda Mackenzie was born in Vancouver on July 22, 1902.

She was a talented musician, and she had a long career as a teacher.

She did not marry.

She died in Victoria, British Columbia on July 27, 1998.

Henriette Doris Mackenzie

Henriette Doris Mackenzie was born in Vancouver on September 28, 1907.

She graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1927.

On May 4, 1932, in Vancouver, she married William John Allardyce (often known as “John”). He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 1, 1897. His parents were Thomas Allardyce and Minnie Henderson.

Duncan Oliver Mackenzie

Duncan Oliver Mackenzie was born in Vancouver on May 30, 1905.

He was a radio operator and radio repair technician.

On July 10, 1939, in Vancouver, he married Frances Catherine MacDonald, who was a school teacher. She was born in Victor, Colorado on June 24, 1904. Her parents were Alexander Edward MacDonald and Catherine Forrester Jack.

Duncan worked as a radio inspector in the Radio Regulations Division of the Department of Transport. He retired in 1965.

Frances died in Victoria, British Columbia on November 14, 1989.
