Harry Templer Widdicombe was a railway express agent and wharfinger. He lived at 958 Denman Street in 1900.

Family Background and Early Life

Harry Templer Widdicombe was born in Hyderabad, India on October 16, 1864. His parents were Colonel William Widdicombe (about 1825-1875) and Annie (possibly Templer). Colonel Widdicombe was with the Bombay Staff Corps; he was also a judge of the District Court at Kurrachee (now called Karachi, Pakistan). Harry’s mother was Annie (her surname was possibly Templer).

In 1871, Harry was in Collumpton, Devonshire, England.

To Canada

From 1885 to 1887, Harry was living near Calgary, Northwest Territories.

Marriage to Elizabeth Batchelor

From August 1887 to March 1888, Harry was in England.

On February 14, 1888, in Jacobstow, Cornwall, England, Harry married Elizabeth Letitia Batchelor.

Elizabeth was born at Jacobstow on August 17, 1865. Her parents were Frederick Thomas Batchelor (about 1827-1897) and Charlotte Salusbury Trelawney (about 1829-1894). Frederick Batchelor studied at Wadham College, Oxford and he became the rector at Jacobstow.

Elizabeth’s grandfather was Sir William Salusbury Trelawny, who was a baronet in England.

One of Elizabeth’s sisters, Charlotte Levinna Batchelor (1870-1960), married Stanley McNab Henderson (1864-1942), who was the British Columbia manager for the Imperial Life Assurance Company. He lived at 901 Chilco Street from 1919 to 1924 and at 1933 Robson Street from 1925 to 1942. (Further information appears on the page for Stanley McNab Henderson.)

Another sister, Anne Batchelor, (1867-1963), was an artist and a Christian Science practitioner who lived at 1834 Barclay Street from 1920 to 1939.

Return to Canada

By the end of 1888, Harry and Elizabeth were living in what is now Alberta, when their daughter Evelyn was born.

In February 1889, Harry received three portions of homestead land grants of land.

To British Columbia

By 1891, Harry and Elizabeth were in the Upper Kootenay district of British Columbia.

The 1898 British Columbia voters list showed Harry as a mine foreman in New Denver, British Columbia. He also appeared on the list as a train baggageman, living at 1123 Barclay Street in Vancouver.

To Vancouver

On April 16, 1900, in Vancouver, the Widdicombe family took part in the wedding of Stanley McNab Henderson to Charlotte Levinna Batchelor.

Harry’s Marriage to Catherine Odell

On April 8, 1915, in Los Angeles, California, Harry married Catherine Amelia Odell, who was born in Indiana on May 5, 1877.

Catherine’s parents were Isaac Henry Odell (1847-1919) and Amelia E. Nugent (1854-1877). Isaac and Amelia were married in Louisiana on March 8, 1876.

Amelia died in Evansville, Indiana on May 10, 1877.

In 1879, Catherine’s father, Isaac, married his second wife, Anna Virginia Iglehart (1853-1918).

In 1920, Catherine was living in Los Angeles. She was a widow, and she was working as a stenographer for an oil well business.

Lewis Trelawny Widdicombe

Lewis Trelawny Widdicombe was born in Vancouver on February 20, 1900.

In 1919, he became a second lieutenant in the Indian Army.

In 1927, in Chelmsford, Essex, England, Lewis married Catherine Eileen Josephine Murphy. She was born in Downpatrick, Ireland on March 31, 1901.

In 1939, Lewis and Catherine were in London. Lewis was the managing director of the Warwick Club.
