Gagen, Harry (1865-1947)

Harry Gagen, about 1912, on board “Megantic” (ancestry.ca)

Henry (Harry) Gagen was a managing director of T.B. Cuthbertson & Co., a men’s furnishings store in Vancouver.

He lived at 1872 Pendrell Street from 1917 to 1919.

Early Life

Harry Gagen was born on October 29, 1865, in Clenchwarton, Norfolk, England. His parents were Goddard Gagen (1823–1912) and Ann Stockdale (1829–1914).

By 1881, when he was 14, Harry was living in Alton, Hampshire, working as a draper’s assistant. In 1891, he was in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Marriage to Minnie Sydenham

On September 10, 1891, Harry married Minnie Elizabeth Sydenham. She was born on May 24, 1869, in Beaminster, Dorset, England. Her parents were James Sydenham and  Susan Guy.

While they were living in Hampshire, Harry and Minnie had two sons: Guy, born in 1892, and Arthur, born in 1895.

Business Partnership with Stanley Sharp

Harry was in a partnership with Stanley Sharp at 100 High Street in Winchester, England. They carried on business as “hosiers, hatters, and general outfitters.”

Marriage Difficulties

Harry’s marriage did not go well. In 1907, Minnie and Harry created a deed of mutual separation. Minnie was to care of Cyril, and Harry was to pay for their upkeep. Harry was to look after Guy.

However, Harry’s support for Minnie was inadequate. Minnie, who was training as a maternity nurse in London, England, started court proceedings to recover maintenance from Harry.

Harry and Stanley Sharp dissolved their partnership on January 30, 1908.

London Gazette, February 11, 1908, page 995; https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/28108/page/995/data.pdf.

Harry went to North America later in 1908, along with Guy. Accompanying them was a young woman named Gertrude Minnie Saywood, who was born in Malmesbury district, England in 1882.

By 1909, Minnie Gagen and Cyril had moved to New Zealand, where Minnie became a midwife.

Harry obtained a divorce from Minnie by petitioning a court in Washington State in 1912, alleging that Minnie was a habitual drunkard.

To Vancouver

In 1917, Harry was living in Vancouver and working with T.B. Cuthbertson and Company. (Verner Robert Fullerton, who lived at 1929 Beach Avenue from 1916 to 1919, also worked with T.B. Cuthbertson and Company.)

Marriage Ceremony with Gertrude Saywood

In June 13, 1918, in Los Angeles, California, Harry went through a marriage ceremony with Gertrude Saywood. (There are several sources for this marriage. Some give June 6 as the date; others say that it was on June 13.)

On December 7, 1918, Harry’s and Gertrude’s daughter, Daphne Ramona Gagen, was born in British Columbia (probably in Vancouver). Daphne died in Vancouver on November 5, 1923.

Harry and Gertrude had another daughter named Jose (Kathleen Jocelyn Gagen), who was born in December 1926 or January 1927.

(Harry’s first wife, Minnie, may not even have known about the divorce from Harry. In any case, she continued her midwife practice in New Zealand, until she contracted septicaemia and she died in Wellington, New Zealand on September 4, 1922.)

Harry in Vancouver

By 1925, Harry was still the manager of the T.B. Cuthbertson store, and he was living on Kilmer Road in North Vancouver.

In 1926, the Montreal firm of Milton’s Limited bought T.B. Cuthbertson’s business in Vancouver. Harry became a director of Milton’s Limited, and he supervised Milton’s Vancouver branch.

Vancouver Province, March 4, 1926, page 15, columns 6-8.

In 1927, Harry was the manager of Milton’s Limited. He was living at 227 East 10th Street in North Vancouver.

Harry: to New Zealand

About 1928, Harry contacted his son, Cyril, in New Zealand. Harry went to New Zealand for a family visit, apparently coming back to Canada for a short time. He returned to New Zealand, leaving Gertrude and Jose without support in Vancouver.

In 1929, Harry applied to the New Zealand court for a declaration that his marriage to Gertrude was a nullity. The court concluded that Harry was both resident and domiciled in Canada, and since the marriage ceremony in California had not been celebrated in New Zealand, the New Zealand court had no jurisdiction to hear the petition.

From 1933 to 1935, Gertrude was living at 323 East Keith Road in North Vancouver. In 1935, she and Jose went to New Zealand to get the courts there to order Harry to pay family support. Gertrude was unsuccessful in her claim for herself, but the court upheld the claim for Jose.

Marriage to Kathleen Edmonds and Later Life

In 1935, in New Zealand, Harry married Kathleen Mary Mead Edmonds, who was born in New Zealand in 1891.

Shortly afterward, it appears, Harry and Kathleen moved to Australia.

In 1938, Harry and Kathleen travelled to London, England. Later that year they returned to Australia.

Harry died in Toowoomba, Queensland on August 6, 1947.

Gertrude died in Auckland, New Zealand on February 11, 1981.

Kathleen died at Tweed Heads, New South Wales, Australia, on July 26, 1989.

Harry and Minnie had two sons.

Guy Sydenham Gagen

Guy Sydenham Gagen was born in August 1892, in Farleigh Wallop, Hampshire, England. He was interested in mathematics, chemistry, and fossils.

After a visit to North America about 1908, Guy settled in Canada. He went back to England for a visit, and he returned to Canada in February 1914.

In September 1914, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

On December 29, 1924, in Vancouver, Guy married Anna Melvina Willard. She was born in the Portland, Maine on December 3, 1893. Her parents were Cyrenus Trowbridge and Annie Gardiner.

Guy and Anna had a girl named Tootsie (perhaps her actual name was Harriet), followed by twin sons Guy (Gary) Melven Gagen and Victor Trowbridge Gagen, who were born in Edmonton, Alberta on March 20, 1920.  (In the 1921 Canada census, Guy was at Canmer, near Medicine Hat, Alberta, along with Anna and three children: Harriet, Guy and Viktor. According to the census, the surname for Anna and the children was “Willard.”

Sometime after the war, Guy went prospecting for gold in central British Columbia, living mostly off the land.

Guy and Annie were divorced, and Annie married Francis Joseph Caswell. Annie died in Vancouver on February 26, 1957.

Guy was married for the second time, in Quesnel, British Columbia, on November 23, 1934. His second wife was Gladys Myrtle Elliott, who was born in Molson, Washington State, about 1904. Her parents were Paul du Bourgoine and Rose Cooper.

Guy died in Vancouver in September 19, 1987.

Arthur Cyril Gagen

Arthur Cyril Gagen was born on May 3, 1895, at Cliddesden, near Basingstoke, Hampshire.

In 1909, he went with his mother to live in New Zealand.

After enlisting with the New Zealand forces during the First World War, he fought at Gallipoli and in France.

After the war, he married and he had a family. He died in New Zealand on April 3, 1975.

Harry and Gertrude had a daughter named Kathleen Jocelyn (Jose) Gagen.

In 1950, she  married Robert Wright in Auckland, New Zealand.
