Edwards, Arthur Harper (1878-1949)

Arthur Harper Edwards was a chartered accountant. He lived at 1860 Nelson Street in 1917 and 1918.

He was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 6, 1878. His father was James Pawson Edwards (1852-1930), an accountant who was the treasurer of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.

Arthur’s mother was Emily Elizabeth Harper (1850-1937), who was the daughter of John Harper, a Toronto architect, builder and local politician.

Arthur went to the Model School in Toronto. In 1892, Arthur’s father was planning for Arthur to go to Upper Canada College. (Arthur does not appear in the list of Upper Canada College’s students from 1829 to 1898; or in the list from 1829 to 1916.)

Arthur’s uncle was George Edwards (1861-1947). In 1903, Arthur was working in Toronto with his uncle’s accounting firm of Edwards and Company:

George Edwards later became a partner with William Pomeroy Morgan in the accounting firm of Edwards, Morgan & Co.

By 1911, Arthur was living in Calgary, Alberta. He was a chartered accountant with Edwards, Morgan and Company’s office in Calgary. In 1911 he was a founding member and the first elected president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta.

Arthur first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1912. He was “of Edwards, Morgan & Company,” and he was living at 900 Robson Street. By 1913, he had moved to 1630 Barclay Street.

On August 30, 1913, in Vancouver, Arthur married Annie Elizabeth Miller. She was born in England on February 19, 1881. Her father was John Thomas Miller; her mother was probably Elizabeth Buttfield Lees. Annie had arrived in Canada in 1899; she came to Vancouver about 1913.

Arthur was the president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in 1915 and 1916.

In 1916, Arthur and Annie were at living at 1176 Barclay Street. In 1917 and 1918, they were at 1860 Nelson Street.

By 1919, they had moved to 1629 Harwood Street.

By 1921, they had moved to 3057 39th Avenue. They continued to live in a series of houses on Vancouver’s west side until 1933.

From 1934 to 1939, they were at number 56, Kensington Place, 1386 Nicola Street.

In 1940, they moved to North Vancouver.

Arthur died in North Vancouver on May 19, 1949.

Annie died in North Vancouver on May 21, 1963.

Arthur James Gordon Edwards

Arthur James Gordon Edwards was born in Vancouver on October 23, 1914.

He worked as an office clerk. He never married.

He died in North Vancouver on February 20, 1941. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Audrey Elizabeth Edwards

Audrey Elizabeth Edwards was born in Vancouver on August 22, 1916.

In 1939, she met John Leslie (Jock) Coombe. He was born on December 30, 1917, in Sussex, England. In 1942, Jock and Audrey were married in Vancouver. Jock worked for Canadian Pacific Airlines.

Audrey died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on January 5, 1993.

Jock died on October 10, 2013.
