Ernest Ralph Purdy was the Vancouver superintendent of The Bradstreet Company, a commercial and credit reporting business. He lived at 1040 Denman Street in 1906.

 

Early Life

Ernest Ralph Purdy was born in Belleville, Ontario, on August 28, 1874. His parents were Ernest Ralph Purdy (1935-1916) (often called “Ralph.”) and Sylvia Maria Haines (1840-1882).

 

To Vancouver

By the 1890s, Ralph Purdy (Ernest’s father) was living in Vancouver, operating a real estate, renting and insurance agency.

By 1899, Ernest was a broker with his father’s company.

In 1900 Ernest was the chief clerk at the Vancouver office of The Bradstreet Company.

To Nelson

In the summer of 1900, Ernest moved to Nelson, British Columbia, where he became Bradstreet’s representative in the Kootenays.

 

 

Marriage to Amy Smith

On October 16, 1900, in Nelson, Ernest married Amy Giles Smith. She was born in Canton, Illinois, on June 27, 1872. Her parents were Amos Smith and Katherine E. Giles.

In 1901 Ernest and his father appeared in the Nelson directory. They were living on Hendryx Street, near the intersection with Silica Street.

Return to Vancouver

Ernest returned to Bradstreet’s office in Vancouver in the fall of 1905. The Victoria Daily Colonist’s initial story referred to Ernest as “Mr. E.R. Peabody.”

The later stories confirmed that Ernest R. Purdy was the new superintendent of Bradstreet’s.

To California

In the fall of 1907, Ernest and Amy moved to California. Some newspaper reports implied that Ernest wanted to move because of his own health; others said that Amy’s health was the reason for the move.

In 1912 Ernest applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1920, Ernest left Bradstreet’s and he started working for a new credit reporting business called the Los Angeles Daily Recorder.

 

 

Later Life

It appears that Ernest and Amy were divorced. Amy died in Ventura County, California, on November 11, 1961.

Anna was born in Paris, France, on March 7, 1886. Her parents were Henry Albach and Anna Rothenberg.

Ernest died in Los Angeles on January 3, 1944.

Anna died in Los Angeles on July 29, 1967.

 

 

Ernest and Amy had the following children.

 

Jessie Monica Day Purdy

Jessie Monica Day Purdy was born in Nelson, British Columbia, on August 15, 1901.

On November 9, 1924, in Orange County, California, she married Max William Dorman. It appears that this marriage ended in divorce.

Max later lived in Alaska. He died in King County, Washington, in 1978.

Jessie was later known as Jessie Durant. She died in Skagit County, Washington on October 18, 1985.

 

Kathryn (Catherine) Smith Purdy

Kathryn (Catherine) Smith Purdy was born in Vancouver on August 8, 1902.

On July 19, 1926, in Alameda County, California, she married John Raymond Cluen (1903–1944).

She later married Clark Goodart (1909-1979).

Kathryn died on October 11, 1994, in Sonoma County, California.

 

Marjorie Purdy

Marjorie Purdy was born in Tacoma, Washington, on August 28, 1904. She died in California in 1918.

 

Marian Sylvia Purdy

Marian Sylvia Purdy was born in Hollywood, California, on December 6, 1909.

She married Mr. Henderson.

She died in California on August 20, 1976.
