William Alexander Barber was a bookkeeper.

He lived at 1830 Morton Avenue in 1915 and 1916.

Family Background

William Alexander Barber was born on December 1, 1872, in Chislehurst, Bromley district, Kent, England.

It appears that his parents were William Albert Barber and Emma Simkins.

Marriage to Kathleen Gowman

In 1904, in Poplar, East London, England, William married Kathleen Amy Gowman. She was born about 1881 in Greenwich or Maidstone, Kent. Her parents were Samuel James Gowman (1845-1923) and Mary Heale Cudmore (1846-1922).

In 1911, William, Kathleen, and their children, William and Muriel, were living in the Norwood area of London, England.

To Vancouver

William A. Barber first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1914. He was living at 1701 Burnaby Street, and his occupation was “real estate.”

In 1915 and 1916, he was at 1830 Morton Avenue.

In 1916, he was working for Robert B. Harvey and David Y. Gorrie, who ran an auction business. (David Yeaman Gorrie (1880-1972) lived at 748 Gilford Street from 1916 to 1920.)

The 1917 and 1918 directories showed William A. Barber still in the real estate business. He was living at 2615 Cambridge Street, and he was on active service with the military forces. (He had enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on May 2, 1917.)

According to the directory listings, William was back in Vancouver in 1919, living at 2615 Cambridge Street. There is no further information showing him in Vancouver after 1919.

To New Zealand

Kathleen immigrated to New Zealand in 1924, along with four children: Kathleen (age 17); Muriel (age 16); Mary (age 13) and Harold (age 7).
