On May 21, 1896, Alfred married Adela Winifred McCurdy. She was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire on March 18, 1873. Her parents were John Francis McCurdy (1829-1881) and Elizabeth Martha Driffield (1837-1925).

Alfred was a lawyer in Auckland for several years. Then he and Adela went to Sydney, Australia, where Alfred studied accounting and finance.

Alfred and Adela travelled to Canada in 1906, along with their son, Francis, who was born in Australia.

In 1920 he became the city controller.

In 1930, Vancouver’s city council asked Alfred to respond to charges of ineffectual control and lack of supervision in city departments.

Although there was much public debate over Alfred’s principles and methods, he continued as a city employee. In 1933, he became the city’s treasurer and financial adviser.

In 1935, Alfred, Adela and their children were living at 1746 Haro Street in Vancouver.

Francis Canning Pilkington was born in Sydney, Australia on January 5, 1903. (Sometimes his middle name appeared as “Channing.”)

He worked as a carpenter.

He belonged to the Irish Fusiliers, and he served with the Canadian military forces during the Second World War.

He did not marry.

He died in West Vancouver, British Columbia on March 4, 1990.

Roderick Alfred Pilkington

Roderick Alfred Pilkington was born in Vancouver on November 24, 1907.

He won a medal and a scholarship for the student with the highest standing in British Columbia.

He was a student at the University of British Columbia.

In 1932, he obtained a Master of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia’s department of economics. His thesis topic was “A Survey of Empire Trade.”

In 1937 he was a license inspector for the City of Vancouver.

On July 2, 1937, in Vancouver, he married Elizabeth Thomson Robertson, who was a school teacher. She was born in Vancouver about 1911. Her parents were Walter Robertson and Edith Duncan.

He served with the Canadian forces during the Second World War.

In 1948 he obtained a bachelor of laws degree from the University of British Columbia, and he later had a law practice in Vancouver.

He was also an experienced mountain climber. Mount Pilkington, in southwest British Columbia, is named after him. (It is not the same as the Mount Pilkington in the Rocky Mountains, near the British Columbia-Alberta border.)

Roderick died in Agassiz, British Columbia, on November 7, 1978.

Marjorie Alathea Pilkington was born in Vancouver about March 1911.

She worked as a stenographer and as an artist.

By 1972 she was retired and living with her brother, Francis.
