Family Background

Alexander Gibb Henderson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on May 10, 1874. His parents were Alexander Gibb Henderson and Catherine Stewart Todd.

Alexander Gibb Henderson (senior) was a coppersmith and brass founder. He was born in Lothian, Scotland, in 1842. On June 1, 1868, in Edinburgh, Scotland, he married Catherine Stewart Todd.

In 1874, Alexander and David Ritchie received a patent for “improvements in the construction of liquid coolers or refrigerators.”

In 1877, Alexander and two other partners planned to take over the Glen Kinchie distillery business at Kinchie, about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The partnership agreement said that, if a partner were to be “declared insolvent,” then he would cease to be a partner.

In September 1878, Alexander’s coppersmith business was in trouble, and he issued a notice to his creditors saying that he was insolvent. The distillery partners successfully sued to end Alexander’s share in the partnership.
