“Observation Car Photographer Dies,” Vancouver Su, December 31, 1963, page 2: “A veteran photographer whose pictures can be found in snapshot albums the world over has died after a brief illness. Harry E. Bullen, 1747 West Fifth, used to take pictures of the crowds on Vancouver’s colourful B.C. Electric observation cars which were abandoned in 1950. When the late Teddy Lyons was entertaining passengers with his yarns and wisecracks during the two-hour, 50-cen sightseeing tour, he would halt the car while Mr. Bullen took pictures from an upstairs window. Before the trip was over, he would show the passengers the pictures already developed by ‘the world’s fastest photographer.’ Bullen was born in London, and was one of 10 boys chosen from all over England to become a chorister in the Chapel royal, Windsor. He graduated in engineering from Dulwich College but decided to make photography his career and opened a studio in London. He came to Canada in 1904, settling in Edmonton, where he set up a studio in a tent. In 1907, he moved to Vancouver and became official photographer for the B.C. Electric, covering hydro developments. He is probably best remembered for his work on the observation cars. He kept the negatives on file and for years received request for prints from all over the world. At one time he had a studio in the Royal Trust Building, and in 1934 he opened a portrait studio on South Granville. He retired in 1955.”
