Elizabeth Spear was the widow of William John Spear. She and her family lived at 1812 Nelson Street in 1919.

 

Elizabeth Spear: Family Background

Elizabeth Spear was born Elizabeth Ann Carlyon Edwards in 1868 in Pensilva, Liskeard, Cornwall. Her parents were Richard Polglaze Edwards (1842-1922) and Mary Jane Carlyon (1843-1931).

Richard Polglaze Edwards died at Fulford Harbour, British Columbia, on February 10, 1922.

Mary Jane Edwards died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on March 16, 1931.

On January 27, 1891, in Victoria, Elizabeth married William John Spear, who was a music teacher and musical instrument dealer.

William John Spear was born in Crawlington, England on September 3, 1868. His parents were Richard Sleep Spear (1838-1913) and Mary Ann Jackson (1837-1895).

Mary Ann Spear died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on December 25, 1895.

William’s sister, Mary Ellen Spear (later Smith) (1863-1933), also lived in Canada. Her husband was Ralph Smith (1858-1917), a coalminer, labour leader, and politician. Mary also became a successful politician who served in the British Columbia legislature as a minister without portfolio. She also acted for a time as the speaker in the legislature.

 

William John Spear: Life in Nanaimo

In 1889, William was a music teacher in Nanaimo. He also sold musical instruments and music supplies.

In October 1894, William assigned all of his property to his father, Richard Spear, who sold the property and distributed the proceeds proportionately to William’s creditors.

By 1903 William was a clerk appraiser at the customs house. He later worked as a customs broker, sometimes with John Percival Geddes, who lived at 1055 Denman Street from 1902 to 1910. William also had his own customs brokerage firm for a time.

William died in Vancouver on February 4, 1919. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Elizabeth died in Vancouver on February 13, 1928. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

William and Elizabeth had the following children.

 

Wilfred Edgar Spear

Wilfred Edgar Spear was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on September 23, 1892.

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

He worked as a broker.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

Wilfred later lived in California.

On June 1, 1922, in Los Angeles, California, he married Marjorie Davis. She was born about 1894 in Canada. Her parents were Thomas George Davis and Miriam Earl.

In 1938 he became a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1940 Wilfred was working as an investment banker in Pasadena, California.

He died in Los Angeles County, California, on May 4, 1953.

 

Norman Polglaze Spear

Norman Polglaze Spear was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on March 9, 1895.

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

He later lived in California.

In 1934 he applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

He died in Contra Costa, California, on December 16, 1966.

 

Reginald Gordon Spear

Reginald Gordon Spear was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on March 9, 1895. (Some sources say he was born in 1885, but this is unlikely).

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

He was killed during the war, and he was buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.

Mary Ethel Dorothea Spear

Mary Ethel Dorothea Spear was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on June 11, 1896.

In 1901 and 1911 she was living with her parents.

On April 25, 1925, in Vancouver, she married Gordon Arnold Arnold-Wallinger, who was an assistant agent for Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company. He was born on February 9, 1899 in Fort Steele, British Columbia. His parents were Noel Sterling Austin James Arnold-Wallinger and Jessie Ariel Beale.

Dorothea died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 28, 1971.

Gordon died in Vancouver on May 8, 1988.

In 1956, Dorothea’s and Gordon’s daughter, Jill, married James Ross Ker.

William Alan Spear

William Alan Spear was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on March 19, 1900.

In 1901 and 1911 he was living with his parents.

He did not marry.

He died in Vancouver on March 12, 1941.
