Hugh Arthur Edward Bragg was a salesman for A.E. Austin and Company, a firm of estate agents, insurance and investment brokers.
Hugh lived at 1101 Gilford Street in 1911.
The head of A.E. Austin and Company was Albert Ernest Austin (1878-1931).
Family Background and Early Life
Hugh Arthur Edward Bragg was born on April 18, 1880, in the Lambeth district of London, England. His parents were Henry Bragg (1840–1898) and Mary Elizabeth Blackwell (1840-1925).
Henry and Mary were married in Lambeth on October 16, 1859.
They were living in Wellington, New Zealand, when their oldest child was born in 1861.
By 1863, they were in Nelson, New Zealand, when their second child was born.
By 1870, they were back in Brixton, England, where their other children were born.
Hugh appears to have been the second-youngest child.
In 1881, the family was living at 89 Stockwell Park Road in Lambeth, Surrey. Henry Bragg was working as a builder.
In 1891 the family was in Lambeth.
In the later 1890s, the Bragg family was at 342 Brixton Road in London. Although 342 Brixton Road no longer exists, it was similar to 340 Brixton Road, which is still standing.
Henry Bragg died on August 16, 1898.
In 1903 and 1904, Hugh and his brother, Frederick, were living in their mother’s furnished accommodation at 342 Brixton Road.
Mary Elizabeth Bragg died on January 11, 1925.
Hugh Bragg in Canada
In April 1910, Hugh and his wife, Colleen, arrived in Canada. (Information on their marriage is not available.)
Hugh described himself as a secretary, working in the farming business. Colleen, who was two years younger than Hugh, said that she was born in Ireland.
To Vancouver
In 1911, Hugh was living at 1101 Gilford Street in Vancouver.
By 1912, Hugh had moved to 795 Nicola Street. He was working as a salesman for A.E. Austin and Company.
In 1913, Hugh was in Point Grey, on the north side of 37th Avenue, near Balsam Street.
Military Service
In March 18, 1915, Hugh enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was living on 37th Avenue with his wife, Colleen, and was working as a salesman.
He served until he was demobilized from the military forces in 1919.
Return to Vancouver
By 1919, Hugh was back in Vancouver, living at 1155 Melville Street.
In 1921, he was at no. 18 of the Richmond Apartments at 915 Robson Street.
He was a traveller for Cassidy’s Ltd., a firm that sold a wide variety of china, crockery, glassware, and other domestic goods.
Hugh continued to work for Cassidy’s for several years.
From 1922 to 1925, he was at 3536 Point Grey road.
In 1926, he appears to have moved to 306-2570 Hemlock Street.
After 1927, he disappeared from the Vancouver directories.
Possible Move to Australia
According to some sources, Hugh (and possibly Colleen, as well) were in Australia in the 1920s and 1930s.
There is a reference to a Colleen Bragg being buried in Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park in Matraville, Randwick City, New South Wales. She died in 1929.
A man named Hugh Bragg died in Chatswood, New South Wales on August 20, 1937. (The death notice said that he was formerly of Streatham, England. Streatham is not far from Brixton, so it appears that this may be the same person.)

The ten acres of copyhold land held of Lambeth Manor which lay on the west side of Brixton Road were sold in 1803 by William Brown Angell to Thomas Woodroffe Smith. (fn. 166) A small portion of the land was let under a licence to demise granted in 1807 (fn. 184) but Nos. 314–320, 332, 334, 340 and 342 Brixton Road were erected by Evan Roberts of north Brixton, (fn. 185) slate-merchant, under a licence granted in 1826 to Smith’s trustees. Nos. 314–320 are two plain pairs of stock brick houses, well elevated above the road. They are of three storeys with semibasements and are set forward at the ends above their Greek Doric porches. No. 318 is ruinous. Nos. 332 and 334 are another plain pair, and have coupled antae flanking their recessed entrance porches. Nos. 340 and 342 are a pair of larger villas of three storeys above semi-basements. Their fronts were almost identical until the central Ionic porch of No. 342 was mutilated. Both have round-arched windows over the porches, and their ground floor windows, set in shallow elliptical-arched recesses, have moulded linking impost bands.
