Connell, Jasper Spence (1884-1965)

Jasper Spence Connell was an engineer. He lived at 1972 Robson Street in 1919 and 1920.

Jasper was born in New York City on July 30, 1884 (although he sometimes gave his birth year as 1888). His father was Hugh George Connell (1840-after 1920), who was a bank clerk. Hugh was born in England about 1840, and went to New York about 1848. On August 10, 1869, in New York, Hugh married Ellen Elizabeth Spence, who was born in New York about 1846. She died in New York on May 22, 1916. Hugh was still living in New York City in 1920.

Jasper lived with his parents in New York City until about 1910. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1906. He became a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity. He was a representative of the City of New York at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915.

Sometime between 1910 and 1918, Jasper married Zanita Drake. She was born in California on September 5, 1888. Her father was Harvey Scott Drake, who was born in California in 1855. He was still living in California in 1930. Zanita’s mother was Charlotte Mcquesten, who died about 1897 in California.

In 1915 and 1916, Jasper was living in Oakland, California. He worked as an engineer for the construction firm of Van Sant-Houghton Company.

In December 1915, Zanita was visiting with Mrs. Stanley G. Jewett in Portland, Oregon.

In February 1916, Zanita was a house guest with Mr. and Mrs. George Palmer Putnam in Bend, Oregon. Mrs. Putnam was Dorothy Binney (1888-1982). Dorothy was the daughter of Edwin Binney, a co-owner of Binney & Smith Inc., which made Crayola crayons. George Palmer Putnam (1887-1950) was a member of the Putnam publishing family. George and Dorothy were later divorced, and George married Amelia Earhart (1897-1937), the famous aviator who disappeared in the Pacific Ocean in 1937.

By 1918, Jasper and Zanita had arrived in Vancouver.

While they were in Vancouver, they lived at the following addresses:

1918 to 1920 1972 Robson Street
1921 2893 Point Grey Road
1922 to 1923 2496 York Avenue

In 1918 Jasper was the vice president of Taylor Engineering Company. The managing director of the company was A.J.T. Taylor. Alfred James Towle Taylor (1887-1945) was an engineer who later became most famous in Vancouver for building the Lion’s Gate Bridge. In 1920 and 1921, Jasper was the manager of the Foundation Company of British Columbia.

In 1922 and 1923, Jasper was the manager of J.S. Connell Limited, whose offices were at number 1327, 501 West Hastings Street.

Jasper and Zanita appear to have moved to the United States shortly after 1923. On June 17, 1927, an article in the Arizona Republican mentioned Jasper. In 1930, Jasper and Zanita were still living in Phoenix, Arizona.

By 1935, the family was living in Pasadena, California, where Jasper continued to work as a consulting engineer.

When Jasper registered for the United States military draft in 1942, he was working for the California Shipbuilding Corporation at Terminal Island, California. He and Zanita were living at 39 5th Street in Hermosa Beach, California.

Jasper died in Butte County, California on June 20, 1965.

Zanita died in Butte County, California on August 26, 1973.

Jasper and Zanita had a daughter.
